Crossing with galgo?

Recommended Posts

Hi, as some people commented in the post i opened about videos of coursing in Spain, and i think is not a bad idea, what do you think about using spanish greyhounds instead of greyhounds or instead of salukis?

In my opinion spanish galgos have some good things:

- good stamina, they can run 3/4min without problems, with good training they can run 5, not very usual because they tend to kill before...

- is a selected breed for coursing, because in Spain 99% of galgos are used for coursing and selected for it, are worked dogs.

- very hard dogs, they can run in very bad fields, they can get injured and continue running, hard paws ( most of lines) (photo attached, i took it last season, october, very dry fields, very hot, galgos running)

- lot of heart, they want to kill, very strong feeling, they dont get tired of hares, they learn with the time how to get them easier ( we dont want it in spain, that are called "dirty" dogs, they are killers more than coursers)

- less genetic diseases than greyhounds

But they have also not as good things:

- slower than grey, dont know how fast go salukis..they are good runners for long distances, but for example, in spain, they are not good for rabbits...

- short haired, maybe not the best dog for living outside in cold weather... But used to run in winter, hunting season in spain is during winter, starting early in the morning so,used to cold if they can run...

- bitches are very annoying for getting hot, sometimes too old, sometimes in the middle of the hunting season, not as regular as other breeds can be.

... Dont know, i know more our breed than greyhounds or salukis hehehe

Personally i think they can be a good starting crossing, to add more bloods later, also you have to know most of galgos come with some greyhound blood, but normally from far (5/10%), i think it can be a good first crossing with whippet..
