baw 4,360
Celtic released a song, just can't get enough, young guy recorded it in Thailand with school kids got stabbed to death in Blantyre after an oldfirm game, it's common up here I would imagine thats more about religion than about football Baw..............fighting at the footie was a laugh nothing terrible about it.....ok it was none too clever looking back and it gave the country a bad name in football nationally................but folk getting killed thats not what fighting at the footie was all about..........obviously it all seemed serious and intense at the time but if you went through all the major mobs here in England from West Ham to Millwall.....Stoke to Cardiff......nobody would say it was anything more than boys doing what boys do...................................death nah bollocks to that if thats how it was up there then so be it,but thats not what it was all about down here. Unfortunately gnash, that's how it is up here. Yes religion plays a huge part in it, not for me, I'm as religious as a dung beetle. But anyone who gets killed after a football match by the opposing fans cos he is wearing his teams colours, I'd say that's football related. Up here its not two clubs fans meeting up in a carpark for a jolly. It's small pockets of fans in most towns all over the country. Our manager has been beat up at traffic lights, attacked in the dug out by fans and nail bombs sent through the post. I'm not talking about in the 's I'm talking recent. You can only imagine what it was like back then. He got threatened when he was a Celtic player because he was going to captain his country. He only backed down and retired when they threatened his family. You can say that's about religion too but when the threats only happen cos of the team you play for, it's football related. Rangers captain, yes captain, Barry Ferguson got sent off during an old firm game for being a tit. He then chose to go out in town that Saturday night wearing his teams shellsuit(classy guy). You can imagine the abuse he got, he subsequently got involved in running street battles in bothwell. That's the intensity up here which unless you've experienced it, you can never imagine. We aren't allowed to drink in the stadiums unless your cooperate and oldfirm games are played Sunday afternoons, not because of tv but cos the police insist. Even our government has got involved and hospitals are on alert. Celtic and rangers come oldfirm day detest one another. Rest of the time, they could be our best friends. That's just the way it is up here, your hatred for millwall probably amounts to our rivalry with hearts, rangers and Aberdeen. Celtic and rangers........ That's a different level altogether
gnasher16 31,499
The big clubs never really played a part in rucking on the terraces Baw maybe Man Utd simply through their huge numbers........down here Celtic/Rangers were not thought of anywhere near as highly as the likes of Aberdeen or Dundee simply because their issues were/are with each other........down here every week whether it be West Ham/Millwall/Stoke/Cardiff/Pompey/Forest/Spurs/Chelsea/Birmingham/Wolves etc etc they was all games you would be well up for it was just about your mates and your manor nothing to do with religion or killing people !.....fighting with someone wearing colours was crossing the line and a big no no....bashing someone up just because he supports a different club or wearing different colours was the lowest of the low....................your talking about hatred out of religion and bigotry..............terrace culture was not about hatred it was about representing.......a tattooist pal of mine ive known years was a big bod in the Bushwhackers we would natter and be pals during the week then kick f**k out of each other on a weekend ..... for footie violence you wont find a more intense rivalry in Britain than West Ham/Millwall that doesnt need me to say it thats well documented over many years.......but theres far bigger footballing rivalries of course there is......but fighting at the footie was never about " big clubs " that was the beauty of it.......10 lads standing their ground when outnumbered 5 to 1 against Utd .....that was the glory.... 4 stragglers getting caught out somewhere and having to run at 15-20 lads.....that was the glory even if you got done you still stood on. 500 from one big club shouting abuse at 500 from another big club over a police barrier.......thats not what terrace culture was all about.
