Ben1 3
I need abit of advice with training my lurcher pup to retrieve, ive watched a few dvds such as dave sleights purdeys progress and he has his retrieving socks at 6 weeks old. Mine is 9 weeks and just dosent seem interested it either picks the socks up and shakes them or just sits there uninterested. Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers Quote Link to post
J.DOG 1,355
Put the sock on a rope drag the sock around abit when the pup grabbs it , gently and slowly reel it in saying fetch and repeat the process make it fun , don't over do it as it will get sick then eventually you should be able to throw it and it should retrieve it Atb mate JD Quote Link to post
Mixed Bag 603
try lots of different small objects a crumpled bit of paper or even a toilet roll tube works just as well. smelly socks work better than clean ones if the pup doesnt show an interest put a bit of string round it and make hissing noises and drag it about til the pup mouths it the way you would play with a kitten with a bit of string sooner or later itl catch on Quote Link to post

Sirius 1,391
I would make sure your sat in her bed when you throw the sock/dummy. Also only use the sock/dummy when you do some training don't give the dog access to it all the time, make it special. Good luck Sirius Quote Link to post
Sirius 1,391
Also don't stress or push the dog, relax and make it fun. 1 Quote Link to post
archnighthawk 5
First thing I'd say is don't stress on retrieving. All pups vary in progress I've a saluki/greyhound retrieving from 8 weeks yet a pup I bred myself took ages to start, make it fun for the dog and enjoy it yourself if you getting sick and snarling commands its gonna put it off. Good luck matey Quote Link to post
