mole catcher 1
whilst on my rounds today this little item turned up in the bottom of a mole tunnel. I know its a buckle and the crown is what i believe to be of an early type, before King George V. I would be gratfull for anyone with any info as to its age and if it is a regimental buckle or a general purpose dress type. There is no makers name on it and its made from solid brass, not plated. Where it was found there is a long history of military involvment in this area going back further than Oliver Cromwell so it could be old or relitively new. The crown is set on a background of horizontal lines and there is no writing inside the circle that surrounds the crown. on the front of the back half, hidden when closed there is a small diamond stamped into the brass and on the front half, hidden when closed there is what looks to be either a very small dove or an elongated E. any views or info would be well recieved Edited June 27, 2007 by mole catcher

Guest baldie
At a guess, i reckon its Crimean era, worn as a buckle on the white waist belt/harness, over the red cavalry coats , which were the fore runners of the modern red hunt coat. These were done away with, after the boer war, because the white cross over the red coat made a very easy target, so the army went to khaki, a hard lesson learnt at battles such as Spion Kop.
