Kennel buildings

Guys,

 

I'm after some advice on building some new kennels. The house is on the market and when we eventually move I want to build some new kennels. Currently the kennel sits on patio slabs and opens into a large patio area that is just for the dogs. I want to move all the dogs outside and already have the metalwork but need advice on a base (I'm thinking concrete) and possible drainage, at the moment I have dug the edge of the patio and put down gravel. Also would wooden cabins inside the runs be preferable or are there other alternatives?

 

I'd apprecaite some photos of designs but I also realise you may not want them on the forum.

this is what i have,8 x 8 with concrete base and a fall to the drain.concretes better than slabs imo and a drain is better than a soakaway

me personally i think 8x4 is about right for a terrier,mind you i've kept them in 6x3 at times with no ill effect.

hi mate i would say concrete

but dont mix your own it's to porus that way

get high finish ready mix it's about £ a meter down hear but that would cover 10 squre meaters

at 100 mils thick power float it and any wet stuff will run off easy

dont go for a soakaway it'll stink in the summer and get cloged up with fir in no time

For drainage Si can you go straight into the main sewerage if not can you drop a tank in that can be sucked out like an elson a soakaway will stink in the summer and draw flies.

For the kennels themselves wood cabins are a lot warmer I never use bedding,build it on top of a good pallet base ,that will keep it out of the wet ,I tend to then cover the wood in thin steel sheet stops the dogs from chewing the wood,put a kick board in the doorway keeps draughts of the dogs back,will put up photos when I got time.

Thanks fellas, how can I link the drainage to the main sewer and legally how could I do this? foxtrack i'll take a gander in the screwfix brochure.........

IF YOU WANT TO CONNECT INTO YOUR MAIN DRAIN MAKE SURE ITS THE FOWL AND NOT TOP WATER TO FIND OUT WHICH IS WHICH LIFT YOUR MANHOLE COVER AND GET SOMEOME TO GO INSIDE AND FLUSH THE LOO WITH A BIT OF PAPER IN IT ...IF IT RUNS AND YOU SEE THE PAPER THEN YOUR IN THE RIGHT DRAIN .. :thumbs-up: ONE OR TWO MANHOLES ON YOU PROPERTY IS THE NORM ...SOMTIMES YOU WILL HAVE COMBINED DRAINS THAT TAKE BOTH TOP WATER AND FOWL ...AFTER YOU HAVE FOUND THE RIGHT PIPE ...SHOVE SOME DRAINRODS UP THE PIPE TO FIND THE DIRECTION THEY GO IN AFTER YOU HAVE DONE THAT DIG DOWN AND FIND THE DRAIN AS CLOSE TO YOU KENNEL AS POSSIBLE WHEN YOU HAVE FOUND THE DRAIN GET A T JUNCTION OR A Y JUNCTION AND CUT YOUR DRAIN SO YOU CAN FIX THIS TO THE EXSITING YOU WILL NEED TO BAND SEALS TO FASTEN YOU JUNCTION IN PLACE WHERE YOU HAVE CUT THE EXSISTING DRAIN ..IF ANYBODY NEEDS MORE ADDVICE PM ME AND I WILL BE MORE THAN GLAD TO HELP AS IT WILL TAKE ME AN AGE TO TYPE OUT AND EVERYBODY HAS DIFFERENT DRAINAGE ....I WILL BE ABLE TO TELL YOU WHAT TO GET AND HOW TO DO IT ...ALL THE BEST SNOOP..

FOR CONCERETEING . A BASE ONCE HAVE PUT YOU DRAIN IN PLACE FOR E.G IN THE MIDDLE OF YOU BASE PUT A STRAIGHT EDGE .I.E. A LONG PEACE OF WOOD ACROSS YOUR SHUTTERING AND SET YOUR DRAIN ABOUT 3" LOWER THAN YOUR SHUTTERING WHICH WILL GIVE YOU AMPLE FALL OVER A 3 METER SQUARE ...WHEN ORDERING YOUR CONCRETE GIVE THE BLOKE YOUR MEASUREMENTS AND HE WILL TELL YOU HOW MUCH YOU NEED FOR THE JOB ...ALSO FOR HARDNESS THERES DIFFERENT TYPE FOR EG IF YOU ASK FOR (C21) THAN WILL BE AMPLE FOR YOU JOB ..AS FOR WETTNESS THEY ORDER IN SLUMPS ..I WOULD PERONALLY GET IT WET ...SO I WOULD ASK FOR 70 SLUMP IF YOU GET 50 SLUMP IT WILL BE A BIT STIFFER...AGAIN IF YOU NEED ANY ADVICE JUST PM ME AND I WILL DO MY BEST TO EXPLAIN .. if connecting to main sewer you have to put a back inlet gullet in at the kennel or you get smells drifting up its basically like the traps under sinks ,personally i dont like the idea of the main connection ,firstly you will need to incorporate a inspection chamber at the existing pipe point for rooding back towards kennel in case of blockage,also most properties have separate rainwater and foul systems so i would keep it separate. ok this is what i would do ,install a back inlet gulley in kennel floortake a normal pipe out away from kennel buy atleast 1 metre then cange to the blue land drain/soakaway pipe ( has small holes in it) take it to 1 metre by 1 metre deep pit filled with rubble being care full to leave a good area around end of pipe free from rubble incase of build up resulting in blockage,then back fill around blue pipe with shingle and most of the water will soak out before it hits pit .then mix up a strong concrete or buy in a form fall to back inlet gulley.i pick up dog shit and most hairs are in side the kennel so its really just a clean down jod needed on the base so should never block,then just clean out bottom of gulley every now and again. if your planning on washing down turds this system would be no good....................

For the base you want powerfloated agricultural grade concrete with a 1.5" drop.
