Any help training my dog to jump.

Recommended Posts

Don't try and get puppies to jump anything higher than their own back until they are a year old: jumping damages shoulders and wrists in dogs that haven't yet finished their skeletal growth, besides which, they don't generally have the muscle power to propel them over high fences.

Start off very low, and gradually increase the height. Pups under 6 months can be asked to come over a low board for their food, but it is also important to get them jumping low fencing that they can see through. Chicken wire is ideal for this as you can bend it in half so it is low, and gradually unfold it until it is 3 foot high. Set up a narrow passage if you don't already have one, say down your garden, and let the pup practice over it. Jump it yourself and encourage the pup to follow you, using a toy or food as a lure.

Also teach the 'get over' command as you do it. Later, you can teach 'go under' for high gates or fences you don't want the dog to jump. They soon learn the difference between 'get over' and 'go under'.

I started my pup of by placing a small bit of board set at the same hight as the dog by the back door and step over and encourages her to jump over it as she did I said "up" and gave her a treat once she come over after a few weeks of this this I increased the height slightly, she's only a small dog but she now clears the stairgate I have going from living room to kitchen no problem I don't think she could jump much higher and I won't attempt to try her on anything higher, personaly I don't like a dog to jump but each to there own but the small height she can just helps with getting over small obsticles. Atb with your training.

I saw your dog on another thread earlier it's a brilliant picture.

if your talking about mine then thanks :) it took quite a few attempts to get a half decent pik with this crappy phone lol. And have you got the photobucket app? Usually if you just try and upload piks straight from phone or pc it usualy says that the pik is to large, but through photobucket it scales the pik down and you just copy and paste the image code. thanks that sounds sensible advice i was worried i might have left it a little late hes just turned 10 months.

There's no rush pal, our Milly is 10 months old today and we started to learn her to jump about a week ago, she jumped a small fence yesterday which was about 32" high, and made it look easy peasy, who knows, she might progress to long jump like her aunty Midge lol
