walshie 2,804
I would have put this in the dog section, but as my dog isn't a lurcher or a working dog, I chose general talk. She is a 6 year old Ridgeback and she has got 2 cysts on her neck. One small (about 1/4"), and one large (about 1"). The vet has done tests and said they are nothing to worry about, but on a short-haired dog, they just look so horrible. Is it a big job to remove them (at the vets obviously) or should I just put up with my dog looking lumpy when the rest of her is in terrific shape?
WILF 49,714
Did the vet say they would disperse naturally or what?
walshie 2,804
Did the vet say they would disperse naturally or what? No, she said they were there for good. But she did a biopsy on them and there was nothing sinister in there.

That 1" cyst is rather large, I assume the vets tests were with a needle, and I know that such tests do not always give a conclusive diagnosis, I would carefully monitor both of them at least, but owing to the dogs age and otherwise good health I would seriously consider having them surgically removed and biopsied to confirm no malignancy, which is not a big operation, but maybe costly. ( insurance ? ) I had this with a terrier some years ago and I was pleased I decided this course of action, which gave me peace of mind and at least to me improved the dogs looks.Used to have Ridgeback as a kid in South Africa where my father worked for a while, this was mainly as a guard dog who did his job rather well. Sirius 1,391
There are very common and short of surgery there is little you can do. If they have been checked you just have to live with them.
The-judge 0
I took my 7 year old Lab to the vet yesterday as I found a small lump in her neck. The vet said it was a cyst that had developed in a hair folicle. He shaved the area and lanced it there and then, a large amount of clear fluid came out and the lump has gone. He did say it could refill but nothing to worry about. Has your vet mentioned lancing them?
walshie 2,804
Took her back to the vet yesterday and she took more samples to send off. Vet said she is 99% sure they are sebacious cysts and would only need removing for cosmetic purposes. Pet Plan get your chequebook ready. I thnk I overestimated the size of the larger one as I felt it yesterday and feels like a grape, but with the skin and fur on top it looks about 1".

I have overestimated the size of a bulge I have now and again. The doctor said just a harmless delusion and no treatment necessary.Good Luck Mate
