gonetoearth 5,144
The weather is getting colder as we all know. The fire is getting lit and the heating on more and more. My bitch has a kennel outside and has slept out there since spring. I have her out of the house during the day and in the evenings I have her inside. Then bed times comes and she is off outside and into her cold kennel. I feel like a bit of an asshole kicking her out of the nice warm house and into the cold. But she's an outdoor dog and destroyed the kitchen where she used to sleep as a pup. So off outside she went. I guess what i'm trying to say is... Do you think If dogs are outside dogs, is it best to leave them outside during the evenings? Rather than letting them get comfortable in the warm. Don't get me wrong, her kennel is perfectly fine and has plenty of bedding for her. But going from a warm 20 odd degree house to a pretty chilly 8 degrees and less is a big jump. I have done this with most of my dogs. What's everyone's thoughts on this? . Wether you keep you dog inside or out will have no bearing on it working capability , just like mine i kennles because the stink. Lol

Guest long-tail
remember working away from home few years ago, snow everywhere freezing temperatures at night so the missus let my bitch in the house by 1 in the morning she was pacing about by 2 she was scratching at the door to be let out so missus got up to let her out she went straight into her kennel and bedded herself down for the night just to hot in the house for her i think if the kennel is up to scratch no need for home comfort if they aint used to it
Millet 4,497
I have one in all day and out in the garage on a night..he used to live in the house perminentely till he started fighting with the other's so now he is out on a night with no problem's..everytime he goes out he get's fed so i have no bother getting him in there as he run's out the door and into the garage.. .. If your dog used to sleep in the kitchen try it again now it's older it might well of passed the destructive stage..
scothunter 12,609
I've kept then outside, but akwAys had a dog in the house. I must be lucky cause I don't have any mess to clean up not does my house stink. Apart from the exception of 2 year ago I don't think we get that severe cold to do them harm outside. Going by what I've seen of you lads kennels and the thought that goes into them, I'm pretty sure your dogs will be fine Edited October 18, 2012 by scothunter
mouse 282
my 4 live out in kennells but sneak in the kitchen when they can.they are always free to roam when we are home but are kennelled alone for about 9 hours during the day in the week. had a litter of terrier pups born outside last november and stayed out there all winter and they were fine.i think its your own choice but if they are well bedded in then they will be fine.
