Handling ferrets

Recommended Posts

Just a quick question. Proberly a stupid one. I have 2 15week old Hobs. They are very good and dnt bite and they get excited when they see me but when I hold them they dont want to be held for very long and struggle to get away. More interested in exploing and playing. Is this just normal behaviour for young ferrets and will they grow out of it with age?

If you hold them in one hand thumb and forefinger round there neck and there feet sticking out between your fore finger and the next finger and run your other hand down there body it relaxes them ,but at that age there like teenagers and want into every thing and not held

Do yourself a massive favour and never put them down when they are squirming. Wait until they stop struggling, give them a quick stroke and then pop them down. Saves them learning they can wriggle free.

You need to let them run off energy everyday, after that make sure theyve a belly full of meat and start handling them. Sit on floor

and let them come to you, thats what I do.

I leave it aslong as possible to get mine castrated, some have been ok untill 9 months but you can get them done at 6 months. :)

Thanks mate. Got so many diffrent points of view with when to get them castrated but will just leave them and see when I think they need it done. Let the keep their masculinity as long as possible

Have done the sitting on the floor and they do come to me and climb all over. They just dnt sit still for 2 seconds.

Yes well my vet will do them when their balls are showing. Which is around 6 month. You will know when they need doing as they will

scragg each other and pace up and down the cage. You have to remember though if you let them get into full blown season

before having them done, it will obviously take longer for the hormones to calm down when they have been done.

Try abit of olive oil on a plate, stroke them whilst theyre lapping it up. Theyre ferrets they just want to explore especially as their kits.
