gnasher16 31,600
The whole point is the Paralympic athletes are the same as the Olympic athletes and should be treated with the same respect, pride and support that the Olympic athletes were given when it was time for they're games. They are not the same as Olympic athletes..............i know its a nice romantic saying.....but they are not....................paralympics sports have been manufactured around the athlete.......................in the able bodied Olympics its the opposite, the athlete is manufatured around the event......................you cant change the rules of a sport to suit the athlete and continue calling it the same sport. And its nothing to do with walking a mile in another mans shoes and all those silly sayings.................its just about keeping things real.....................i say again maximum respect to its participants, all of them......................but to expect the worldwide support mainstream sport gets is just unrealistic. gonetoearth 5,144
Knash go down and out bench press the top man there , go and beat the lad with the artificial. Legs over 200. M . Or get in a wheel chair and do the marathon. To walk in another man shoes might just be a saying but it ain't. Sillly. , I grew up with a lad with no legs Before the days of carbon fibre and Kevlar. Upper body strength and agile No they can not compete in the able bodied Olympics but its sport and their Olympics. Edited August 14, 2012 by gonetoearth

If you re read the quote you put on your post their^^ I said the Athletes are the same - not the sports. At the end of the day they are working just as hard as the able bodied to achieve the same result (winning) Just because the sport is adjusted doesn't mean its any easier than the original. To them its just as hard as what the "normal athlete" would see the original sport. If you know what im saying - to them the sport is just as hard as it would be to an able bodied athlete. Hard to explain, and like i said agree to disagree, its your opinion so im not going to sit and say your wrong etc etc

Thats just being daft.............i could say.....ok i,ll go down and take on the best paralympic athlete at powerlifting......he might out lift me on bench press but he,s not going to out squat me or out deadlift me because he hasnt got any legs !!! and that is what powerlifting is its a 3 lift event........................ Its nothing to do with disrespecting the athletes, its about manufacturing the sport around the athletes.......which for me is not right.

johnny boy68 11,726
I think the key part of the Paralympics is the taking part imo......These paralympics will have a few ex-servicemen in them who before being disabled/losing limbs etc could've competed in the Olympics but sadly now they can't, lets let all these competitors have there 2 weeks of competition because ultimatley whether its a manufactured sport its still competitive. spade 224
I'm looking forward to the paralympics as much as the olympics. These athletes train as hard as able bodied athletes and deserve their time in the limelight. Not all the events are manufactured around the competitors and for those that are then so what. As for just keeping doing the sports as a hobby why should they. In exactly the same way that the vast majority of people involved in sport only do it as a hobby, it's only a tiny percentage that reach the pinnacle of being able to compete at the top level. The athletes taking part in the paralympics are at the pinnacle of their sport. Good luck to all of them.
