Tron 173
Morning fellers, yesterday one of my daughters called with a new Norton 360 security disc! FFS!started to download it then it took over 3 hours to put it on, since then it has taken minutes for every command to be carried out, I switched this PC on at 5.25 this morning and it has taken untill now-6-53 am to get rid of the Norton program. it still says it can not restore to a earlier time. and I find it impossible to remove AVG which I put on yesterday hoping it would solve the problems. as I said in my first post I am a real numpty on a PC so I will take it in this morning for repair. Methinks the wife and myself will be having bread and jam this Sunday for dinner!!. Thank you all again. Quote Link to post
Tron 173
Had to remove the Norton 360 download yesterday allmost froze the pc completely.Took my PC to be sorted and found the tech guy off till Friday. went into Start, right clicked. then into programs , took off many entries, was not able to remove AVG, and the restore function is still not working but I have managed to restore sound to videos,Still dont have a clue really what I am doing, but at least its working and I can post and look into different threads allthough it still keeps freezing which is bloody annoying having to switch off then on. thanks to you all for your advice on the matter, Cheers, Tron. higgins 75
The easiest way to sort it would be to take out the hard drive and put a new one in with a fresh windows install,it,s more messing about trying to clean old, affected hard drives.hard drives are cheap enough now,and are much bigger capacity so look at it as an ugrade as well as a repair itwill be like a new machine, Why go to a pc shop for something you could learn to do. ghillies 209
just thought of a simple reason, hard drives full... Quote Link to post
Tron 173
ghillies, I dont think so but you might be correct, I defraged it yesterday and it said--capacity-74.52......free space-56.54...%%%%%free space-75%... I havent really got a lot of stuff downloaded So I thought those figures meant I had plenty of capacity left? or am I talking rollocks again?? Cheers. Quote Link to post
ghillies 209
no not the hard drive space then, did the defrag help any? if it was even a little bit it may well worth trying it again. after that? i cant say tbh, bar a reformat. edit..ctrl alt delete all three together), then start task manager, and have a look how many processes are running, if theres like a shed load 50-60 plus then theres posably too much running from on your start up..alas i dont know the ones you need to keep and which you can take off the start up, things that literaly say avg or what ever with a definate name to relate too you can chose weather to or not, but the exsplorer on the start i need or get no images etc.. trial and error can get through that bit but its a pain putting what you just took off back on..and thats if it doesnt stop it booting up. so from there.. a reformat would be easier unless you actualy know lol. save anything you can to another drive like images etc, your browser favourates.. click on the hard drive in my computer, and take it from there. the rest is pop the disc in, install and wait for ever and a day while it does it lol. for 60 quid an hour or whatever, worth a try in my book, shit comes to a shuv you could buy another drive at them costs.(still have to install everything though). sometimes its time to say stuff it it aint worth paying that much. how much is the info worth to you on the hard drive? i've had two drives deemed nackered by a shop local here, both were just too much on the start up menu, another was just too full, and another i was advised to buy a new mother board and the trimming to upgrade, only the front side bus actualy took the system back agenerasion..i dont like shops lol. sooo..check around before handing over to a shop, curries..dicons etc? sharks, pc rip off? i mean pc world lol..on sale maybe, after that it is actualy pc rip off lol. another edit.. there are programs about for recovering info from bum discs, so if theres anything important on there, for the now you could actual buy a new hard drive and save the old one for later sorting or a recovery of.. Millet 4,497
What about sticking a couple of bigger memory stick in..that is if you have a tower.. Quote Link to post
ghillies 209
that may well help, but if it was running and isnt now.. bar something like a blue screen every time indicating one stick has died... Quote Link to post
Millet 4,497
I suppose it could be anything really..i have had it happen several time's..mother board memmory stick's breaking and one time the white cooling paste under the processor fan had dried up..causing it to shut down all the time. hotshot2me 31
You said you installed AVG, this suggests to me you were running the computer without an anti virus is this correct, what you describe sounds to me that something attacking your computer and i would guess you have a worm virus. this transfers itself to every program/ file you run and eats away at your memory, if you can get onto Microsoft website go to downloads at the top of the page choose your operating system then download the program: Dave http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/products/security-essentials Quote Link to post
Tron 173
Morning all, Dave I allready have that microsoft program running, The last time I had my pc repaired the technician installed -Malware antibytes-antimalware version...and also--Superantispyware free program as well. both these refuse to be removed as well!. Unfortunatly I am a old bloke now and dont understand most of the terminology required to carry out most of the sound advice you fellers have suggested, I did say from the off that I am a PC numpty ,. So I have decided to take my PC in tomorow and ask if he can save my photographs of family events and holidays, then ask him to fit a new hard drive as advised by ghillies if it dont take the bill over too much. Thanks Fellers. Tron. Quote Link to post
