Garn 0
Try leaving the retrieving for a week or so. Then just do 2 or 3 retrieves with her twice a week max. You could also try using a new retrieve object like a squeeky toy. I find that some dogs just get bored of retrieve training, they know what to do but the fun has gone. You could also try putting the object in different places where she's got to think on how to get it out. It's all a game! Quote Link to post
tote 870
What age is your pup mate? Most pups go through difficult periods,in that respect they are similair to kids. You've no doubt heard the expressions-"terrible two's" and "the troublesome teens" My pup is nearly 5 months, last week she stopped bringing the dummy back, infact she stopped picking it up I left her off retrieving for a few days, then yesterday I shot 4 rabbits and 2 rooks,so I tried her with a 1/2 sized rabbit, which she brought back twice . She was back onto the rabbit skin dummy today and she brought it back twice so hopefully we are back on track She isn't as steady on the retrieves as she was but through time we should get there. Training is all about getting through the difficult times. It won't do much harm to give the pup say a week or so of no retrieve training, then start of again with it's favourite dummy, hopefully the pup will switch back onto it. juckler123 707
As Garn says lay off for a couple of weeks a lot of dogs get bored with fetching a dummy. Once the exitement starts to go i start to do more sending back for the dummy work so as its more interesting for the dog try dropping the dummy with the dog on the lead and walking a couple of yards and slip the pup increase the distance daily. Always found you can crack a few things while doing this walking at heel going on command teaches em to use their nose when you start throwing the dummy in cover to place it and its also retrieving at the same time. Gives the dog more to think about than when your just throwing. Comes in handy on the land too Quote Link to post
cymruguy69 5
She's 9 Months now. I have left it for a while and then gone back and she's still the same running round like a maniac then deciding to drop the dummy. Iv'e tried standing against something so she cant run past me but she still doesnt bring back. This winds me up because she comes back great when theres nothing in her mouth. Cheers for the replies. Any Ideas on the above would be awsome. Quote Link to post

J Darcy 5,871
Why not forget all about the retrieving... and just get the lurcher to carry on the lead.... Quote Link to post
Chubs 0
up in till the pup matures a few retrieves a week is enough, end on a good one, do it in an area she has to retrieve in & when she has it in her mouth to begin with crouch & turn/walk away, all that is all well & good but sounds like yours is bored of it so i just would completely lay off for a while. cymruguy69 5
Why not forget all about the retrieving... and just get the lurcher to carry on the lead.... I don't undertand How would that improve her bringing rabbits back when she's working next season? Quote Link to post
