gonetoearth 5,144
There seem to be bait of a misconception. On here about armature boxing being second class to pro Kids join aba clubs from the age of 8 but are not allowed to box till 11 wilst in the the club there are schooled in basic boxing skills foot work and basic shots starting with the jab and basic defence , a fitness regime. Is taught but basic at this age allso we encourage clean kit and hygiene , If and when a lad or girl is deemed advanced enough. They will be selected to join the boxing team this in its self is reward they must in the eyes of the coaching staff fit enough and have leaned the basic skills , the next step is tech sparing learning how move forward and back wards , perfecting jab, parry , push away , blocks. ,moving on to sparing then leaning simple combos All building to a novice bout matching the boxer to suit his wight category age and ability As these boxer move on and if the they stay at the club the level of training is raised to suit the inderviduel this differs from club to club and the experience of the coaches. Some kids excel some kids leave no pressure is placed on any youngster to box they need to deside them selves with their parents permission , boxers that are seen to be talented can be selected to box for county squads. And represent that county moving on to junior ABAs or novice abas , with dedication and leaning skills they can be selected for young ENGLAND ! SCOTLAND ! WALES OR N IRELAND. When on international duty they gain the benefit of international. Coaching and in some cases travel. All this to young lads and girls is life experience , the top armatures now boxing for team GB started at an early age a very few started late but still went throught the same development , last night on BBC1. Admire khan was asked did he regret turning pro his answer. Was IF HE HAD KNOWN THE GAMES WERE GOING TO BE IN LONDON AND LOOKING BACK YES HE WOULD HAVE STAYED AMATURE as he is still only 25. pip1968 2,490
I think we have definately had the rub of the green decisions wise up to now.....but nobody can win through to a gold on luck alone so if any of them were not good enough they,ll get found out eventually.............personally i dont think the best all round fighter necesarily wins an amateur contest in a 1 off bout and thats why i dont particularly like it............but that dont mean you can bullshit your way through a competition the best fighter will usually win the gold over the entire tournament. . Nash before we got lottery funding you had to go back to Moscow. And T WILLIS who won bronze a scouser by the way , to keep out top ams long enough. We need this funding , It creates. Stability. And we can travel to all the international. Compotions to gain invaluable experience we have the talent as you well know and we have the coaches the more succes we have am can only make are succes in the pro game more achievable. If and when the lads turn pro , in the past we lost to many lads far to soon to the pro ranks , for no other reason than money , these lads were doing a days work then. Going training while the rest of the worlds boxerswere funded. And can dedicate them selves we are seeing the benefit of lottery funding. Yes the home games has effect on performance but not as much as the knowledge. That there family don't go without while they strive for medals im working with tony at the moment in runcorn had a good few chats about boxing he was on the radio the other night talking about his career and when he won bronze in moscow and alongsdale belt wish him well from me bud we have not forgot him and frosty. told him that you and frosty havent fogoten him he asked were i was speaking to you told it was on the net but had no name for you he was saying when he used to spa with frosty,if frosty hit you you would stay hit he had a very very good punch

My opinion is there is no better place than an amateur boxing gym for a boy to learn the vital skills and discipline needed not just in a boxing ring but in life itself..........As long as a young athlete can keep an open mind the further he progresses and not be blinded by " this is the way " and can remain an individual theres no reason a lad shouldnt gain great qualities in every area of life from amateur boxing..................pro boxing will be for very few of those lads and as long as once he turns pro he is prepared to forget near everything he learned as an amateur..............again,theres no reason why he shouldnt enjoy a rewarding and financially beneficial time in the game...........................no 2 sports have such major difference between amateur and pro.....and this must always be in a young fighters mind.
