stewie 3,387
do any off you have a "special" tree thats been there as long as you can remember and is a bit of a feature in your hunting life when growing up???? well i do and its known between the lads i used to hunt with as kids as the "meadow oak" basically because its an oak in a meadow,,,,, this tree was the halfway point of a mooch we used to go on that was about ten miles, we used to leave my mates with whatever dogs we could muster, armed to the teeth with gat guns and black widow catapults!!! theres a quarry near his and we used to jump the fence and fill our pockets with the roundest stones we could find in the mountains of stones that were waiting to mixed with the sand for ballast and then we were off down the river popping of at ducks, geese and then through the woods after squirrels, pigeons, rooks and crows!! then it was out on to the meadow and we started bushing with the dogs and although the land never held great numbers it was always good crack!!! then after about half an hour of this we would reach meadow oak and have a rest under the old beauty!!!! when i got abit older and got my own dogs i used to sit under the tree when i was lamping and sit and listen to the night for 5 mins and then start calling for foxes, flicking the lamp across the meadow every couple of mins as it was a great vantage point of the whole place!! once of fox got in slipping range, it should of been a gonna, but in the early days my old mutts were just running them for the sake of it i think but for a 14 yr old lad it was great fun watching!!!!! the first fox i ever caught on the lamp was from under this tree with a bullcross bitch i brought in when i was 20 and the old bedo bitch ive still got now and even today just being underneath it brought the memorable night flooding back!!! i was so proud of that kill i carried it all the way home to go and get my camera,,, in the roots off the tree theres a rabbit warren and i can remember about 3 years ago i was out with my young bull cross bitch and my terrier that went missing,,, he wasnt the best earth dog but was a cracking little bushing dog!! my bitch was just turning a year old so i was trying to get her on some rabbits that robbie (after fowler,, ) put out. so he is away and then starts yapping like feck and i know he has found a fox and gradually the yapping gets quieter as he gets further and further away.... recall was never his strong point.... so after about an hour of shouting and searching im thinking he must of to ground so start retracing my steps, checking any earths on the way.... no luck!!! i was screwing now and thought id just try the meadow oak just incase and sure enough there he was stuck at one entrance unable to get out!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fry1zz3nsVo&feature=youtu.be i managed to get a branch and scrape out enough earth for him to get out!!! he never made contact with the fox tho but it was defo in, the place stunk!!!! when i was in sweden learning about climbing i promised myself id get up right up that tree and today i did it!!! about 25ft up it to be precise!!! and it was a great feeling to to do it!!!! and the memories that came flooding back was amazing, like all the above and other little things like my dad showing the tawnys nest in the there when i was a kid and today 25 years later im touching the hole they were in!!!! anyway im probably boring you as its only a tree to you,,, but to me its a memory that was theres years before me and many more after im gone!!!! some pics..... the gate to the meadow and the oak to the left,,,, there she is!!! she must be well over 200 years old!!! good shot with the throw line, and rope up.... and up i go!!! i never noticed the bullocks over the meadow tho lol thank f**k the dogs are stock broke!!!! some while i was up there the earth where my terrier was stuck is at the bottom of the tree here the tree is slowly dying tho but got many years left in her yet!!!! the top above me when i was at my highest anchor point!!! and then back safe on the ground!!!! then loaded up and home for a brew!!!!! so basically today i climbed a tree and thought id share it, nothing special!!!!,,,,
Lab 10,979
2 trees actually. None hunting related but still memories. The first one is a tree in the village i grew up......its in the ministers garden. A massive tree which we called the "Rubber tree".....you could punch it as hard as you could and it never hurt. Infact we used to chap the ministers door and ask him if we could go punch his tree.......... Maybe you will know what type that will be mate.....massive tree, probably 40 feet tall. It blew down in the winds we had at the beginning of the year....took the wall down and everything. Must have been one of my punches slackened the roots when i was 10............... The 2nd tree is a tree where my next door neighbours sons built a tree house years and years ago. It had a trap door on it. Me and my mate used to sit up there for ages just blethering when we were younger. I remembered it to be really high of the ground until a few years back when i had a walk to it and it was no height at all. Just goes to show when your small everything looks massive. My lasting memory off it was my mate taking a shit through the trapdoor..............pmsl..

All the dogs I've ever had are taken there as pups ,and their names Carved into it.As a Kid I used to walk about 3mile to get there. Now all my kids get Driven there times have changed.. Their names now take place along side the dogs ,all dated..been going awhile and can barely make out some, but as long as it stands I'll return.
