RABBITTING IN THE WHEAT FIELDS

Recommended Posts

Alan W and i decided yesterday to go to the Wheat field today for some Rabbits as it was his day off, as the field is nearer him than me i said i would meet him at 0600. I arrived a few minutes early and Alan was hot on my heels, we had to park at the top gate, Alan B who normally comes with us had something else to do, and he has the key to the gate. we got our tackle together and off we went down the path only getting about 10 yards on when Alan spotted a Rabbit near a puddle of water. I stood back with the camera running hoping to catch him shooting it, but the path is very gravely and it must have heard him and scampered. We kept going further down to the field when i spotted a Rabbit at roughly 80 yards, we had barely taken 2 steps and it was off. there's no way of walking quietly down their, anyway we arrived at the entrance to the fields Alan went to the left and me to the right. as i had gone about 30 yards to get to ware i get in the prone position which is just on a bend of the tree line i saw a Bunny right in front of me a matter of yards i don't know who was more startled it or me. It shot off like a bat out of hell "good song that" so i got into position hoping for some action, I'd been layed down for 75 minutes when i saw a Rabbits ears behind some thistles with the sun shining through them. I had no idea were it came from, unless it had run from the wheat with the cover of the thistles, i was praying for it to show its head and thats all it did show just enough for a shot. It was at 26 yards, i put the cross hairs on it just to the right of the eye pulled the trigger and it was lights out for the Rabbit. When i retrieved it and had a look were the pellet struck it had landed just behind the left eye socket and exited half inch under its right ear stone dead when i picked it up. I layed their another half hour when i got cramp in my right foot so had to get up sharpish thats an effort for me, i was stamping my foot on the floor trying to get the circulation going when as i turned round there was a Rabbit sat about 2 foot from the tree line behind me, i startled it stamping on the ground and was gone. So change of tactics turned round to see if any more came out, after a further hour layed for no show Rabbits my back was killing me. Just as i got up Alan W came round the corner carrying a squirrel, on that we decided to call it a day 1 x Rabbit and 1 x Squirrel, enjoyed it apart from now got bloody back ache, and struggling with shortness of breath don't help, been like this for weeks so next stop Doctors Wednesday but I'll still be out Friday if it kills me: Dave

Dude I would definately get that shortness of breath checked out, it's like a dodgy booty call. It's like watching dads army go hunting, no offence intended.

I thought about taking a camcorder and filming my shots but most the time it's hard enough worrying about a good shot let alone faffing around with a camcorder as well, so well done for trying it.

I think the only time I would film it is if my shooting partner was shooting and I just sat their filming for him.

I agree Mawders. it is hard to do both Video and Shoot but its something I'd wanted to do, i would like to do it like Davy ans SI but we usually split up when we are Rabbitting, the fields we shoot are very large which again makes it difficult, its so easy to find yourself in the totally wrong place. Ive been trying to get my breathing sorted now for 5 months, Ive had all sorts of tests, chest x-ray, camera up and down pardon the French, I'm taking that much Ferrous Sulphate i think I'll turn into an IRON INGOT: Dave

Good effort there buddy.

Your camera work is improving clip by clip.

I take my hat off to you for trying and taking the time to show us your session.

I would really like to work with you on a episode of Verminhunterstv in the future and I'd be willing to film you in action which would let you get on with your shooting without worrying about filming mate.

Going by your accent your not to far from me.

Hi Si, Thanks for the comment, to appear with you on Verminhunterstv would really make my day, i don't no if you noticed in the vid i sounded like a stalker with my Breathing, i was in a right old state when i got home thats one of the reasons it wasn't a long Vid. I was really out of breath, been struggling with it for months now on and off, but got to see the Doc this morning as an emergency and i have a large infected area in my throat thats swollen and obstructing my airway. I'm now on very strong antibiotics for a week so won't be out for a week at least, I live in Castleford West Yorkshire, are you from the Derbyshire area, you sound like you could be: Dave

Well I'm glad that you are sorting your breathing out Dave.

I'm from a small village just out side Nottingham so not too far from you buddy.

Once you are well and we both are free we will have to make a date for a session with the rifles and camera then  .

I'll try to tie it in with when Davy is up at mine again so we all will be together for the filming.

Try and rest a particular permission buddy till then so we have plenty of vermin / air gun quarry to go at on camera :boogy: .

If we made a day of it we could calibrate your rifle for you too mate.

Have you a Hawke scope?

Si.

Hi Si, yes i have a 1000 acre permission that is virtually arrable quite a few Rabbits on it that are inaccessible due to the high crops, its were i shot that 60 yard Rabbit in the horse Paddock if you remember my post a few weeks back it as not been shot much for that reason. David the farmer should be combining any time now, as i passed last Saturday i noticed it was ripe then, The trans pennine way runs right through it but no detriment as there's lots of place's to get out of the way. There's also the golf course that backs on to my backyard permission as i call it, there's also a small 2 acre permission with lots of Rabbits on it about 14 miles from my home, its owned by the landlord of the Pub adjacent to it. Its also a Clay Pigeon shoot, and small caravan park, the Rabbits are all on the clay shoot area. i Haven't been for a few weeks due to the crap weather we've been having, and there's always the fields that we have been protecting from the Pigeons with the shotguns, there are numerous places we could go really that have been rested due to us controlling the Pigeons else ware.

The gun I'm using at present for hunting is the BSA SCORPION SE .177 Topped with a Hawke Sport HD 4-12x50 AO, And also a Hawke Sport 4-10x50 on a, AA S200 MULTI .22. I also have a Brocock Concept Super Six with Tasco 6-24x50 AO but thats by the by. Have either of you got a Shotgun just interested, i know i only see you both with Air Rifles, anyway i'll keep posting and watching for more Vids from your end, and let you know as soon as I'm fit for off then we can sort something out: Dave

Hi Dave

What camera are you using on top of your gun ?

i like this guy for some reason lads seems a very friendly type of bloke hope he enjoys his day out with you si -billy

The camera Is a JVC EVERIO G 32 x OPTICAL, 800 x DIGITAL HDD 40GIG.

Billy, I am a very very nice man, so much so Alan W that now shoots with me is from Royston West Yorkshire about 13 miles from me. he joined on a forum i was on and one of his first posts was discussing were he was shooting which was on a railway line near his home, i told him that he could get done for armed trespass and as i did not want that to happen to someone who had just started shooting. I told him to stop, sent him my phone number and offered to take him with me, Then found 800 acres permission near Ware he lives so that he had some ware to go and save him traveling to me all the time and that we could stagger his traveling to save him expense. And on occasion i would travel their, and we have been firm friends ever since, about 18 months now and i know he'll do anything for me as he as shown in the past, wont let me carry anything heavy calls me his Dad, looks after me like a True Friend: Dave
