greerie 2
Hi fellow ferreters. I'm getting a coupld of ferrets at the end of the month. They are a couple of gills and there 9 weeks old. Ive never had ferrets before but want to get into using them for rabbiting. They are coming from working ferrets so hopefully they will have working blood. What advice can people give me on feeding them, training them up and handling them. Also I have a Jack Russell so whats the best way to introduce them to each other. Are there any good books on the market also that will help me out or am I just best asking questions on here? Well that will do for now lol. Many Thanks Matt Quote Link to post

fox assasin 16
HI mate what i done to train my ferrets up for hunting was bring them to a small warren about 6-8 holes net it up and put them down with an experienced ferret and let them work naturally and when my ferrets were very young i got some drainage piping and just popped them in and out of it If you do put the ferrets in some piping when they pop their head out don't rush in and grab them or else they will get hole shy.Hole shy is when the ferret comes out of a rabbit hole and you go to grab him he will go straight back into the hole.So just keep everything calm and gentle If you want to train your jack russle to the ferrets let the russle see the ferrets in their run/hutch and if he trys to get at them just say NO! Eventually bring the ferrets out onto the garden and put the russle on a lead and leave the ferrets run around and let the dog watch them and smell them.Leave slack on the lead so their is no tention on the lead and if he trys to attack the ferrets say NO!.pull the lead back and say NO! at the same time Eventually he will get the idea that he is not suppose to attack them. When my ferrets were kits i put some raw minced meat or chicken breast or rabbit meat into a blender and blend it up into a paté so its easy for them to eat or you could soak some dry cat nuts in some warm water. Handle your ferrets every day or as much as you can and they should be fine by the ferreting season and clean out their hutches every day or else you will have a disgusting smell every time you walk past the ferrets and the ferret will smell bad aswell. Hope all this helps mate 1 Quote Link to post

obby 10
Probably be better off feeding the whole cat not just its rehydrated nuts (couldn't resist that!) As said there's plenty of good threads on ferret care on here and some very knowledgable minds to pick if you get stuck on a serious note tho cat foods ment for cats and is ok as an emergency back up but there's plenty of good dry ferret foods available so try n steer clear of dry cat food mate.
