ste68blue 8
Hi guys i wonder if anyone can help with a little advice please? A friend of mine has just bought a second hand Winchester 99, over and under, 12 gauge shotgun and they seem to be having a bit of a problem with it, i aren't sure the title is quite accurate but i will try and explain if i can... We were shooting some clays today and for some reason it seems not to always fire on the bottom barrel, its never the top just the bottom. Also when it does misfire on the bottom barrel and they break the barrel it ejects both cartridges rather than just the one that has been fired, its almost as if the gun thinks it has fired both barrels. What we also noticed is sometimes when the barrel is broken the ejector for the bottom barrel seems to pop up as if it were ejecting a cartridge and the firing pin for the bottom barrel is sticking out as well. I have attached a couple of pictures, i hope they are clear enough to understand what i mean. Now we have taken the barrel off and worked lots of oil into the firing mechanism but it doesn't seem to have fixed it. Can anyone suggest what to do? Any help and advice is much appreciated Quote Link to post
ratattack 111
Does the firing pin strike the cartridge? Could be the spring for firing pin is weak/broken. Sounds like it needs a trip to a gunsmith. Quote Link to post
ste68blue 8
Hi, thanks for the reply. When it fails to fire, no there is no attempt to strike the cartridge.... We are gunna take it to the gunsmiths tomorrow Quote Link to post
paulus 26
broken firing pin, if you break the gun and give it a shake it will rattle if broken Quote Link to post
The Duncan 802
could be a trigger sear needs a bit of filing - either way a gunsmith and a fairly cheap fix if its and honest one. Quote Link to post
matt_hooks 188
Almost certainly snapped the firing pin. A gunsmith should be able to sort it reasonably cheaply. Quote Link to post
ste68blue 8
Just a quick update, we took it to the gun smiths and he said that the firing pin may have broken but there is what he referred to as "it has headache" meaning that there is some play between the way the barrel and the working parts slot together. Anyway he reckons on about £150.00 and a couple of weeks to fix, so we left it with him He did say that it was bordering on illegal and we should take it back, problem is it was purchased last week from Euroguns on their closing down sale so there is no chance of that.... air gun ant 1,666
How much did your mate pay for it? I mean will be worth £150 to fix? How much is the gun actually worth in full working order? Quote Link to post
ste68blue 8
Hi, the gun was on the shelf at £400 but closing down sale deduced to £200.00, so i guess paying £150.00 for it fixing is still within the original price tag. Quote Link to post
