My ideal type (not stating breeding, as this could come from a variety of breeding like whin said, pointer, deerhound, saluki, collie etc) would have a good length of leg, good jacket and tough, with a cracking nose. I was a hill keeper before starting up on my own, and my bull/grey worked moors very well, his nose was unbelievable, his coat was his main fault, and even though he performed well, another inch or two on his leg could have helped cover the heather better. BLACKWATER... 157
the moors are local to me , had some [bANNED TEXT] good days up there but if iwas going stay up there be a deerhound type cross either collie or saluki, a good coat as the winter and weather is harsh , saw smooth coated dogs not faring well staying up in the hills were the beardie and deerhound type dont mind ,and thrive , a good hill dog should be capable in handling what qaury comes along like the old scotish deerhound type did years ago Edited June 28, 2012 by BLACKWATER... saluki bouy 915
a run the moorland every year its apbsolutely great right on my door step the hares are great for bringing pups on but you can have some good sport with older dogs especially if you dont let them hunt up keep them on the slip get a spaniel working away in front and give them a long slip dogs have to be quite fast not all out speed machines but they have to cover the ground before hare gets out of sight which to be honest is probably how most dogs loose them you dont get that problem on the fens now. dogs i run are saluki greyhound hybrids and bout twenty three -four inchs to shoulder that dont sit back real up an at them not had many injurys touch wood on the hill probably just as many of it the older bitch struggles abit with the weather some days but the young bitch got a rough coat shes spot on . not sure what id call perfect hill cross but i do beleive any whippety types wouldnt last long and i thinks that more to do with unsighting the quarry . Saluki collie deerhound hybrids bedlington as well an your in the right place . blackwaters on about what dogs the hill keepers keep around here most that i know are cooped up in the kennel all year round brought out now and again and expected to work miricales but most i no keep bull xs couple deerhound an saluki crosses and theres only a couple boys ad give credit to with there dogs this rest i wouldnt even think about . I ve allways fancied a thre quarter greyhound quarter wirehaired pointer would reckon these would be a cracker on the hill . Quote Link to post
