redtailhawk1 84
How old was your whippet pup before you let it run free in the fields? (No rabbits etc in field, just exercise). Edited May 12, 2012 by redtailhawk1 Quote Link to post

redtailhawk1 84
Mine has had his jabs and although well on with basic training sit, come when called walking on lead etc. Just worried incase he decides to run off. The fields are quite well enclosed. Was thinking of letting him stay on the lead for first couple of times n watch the other two dogs come back and walk to heal when told. Quote Link to post

Let him follow the Springer. Also got a jack x that will not leave my side because it is the kids house dog & pet. So thinking the whippet will stay with them. Quote Link to post
paulus 26
normally they will stay next to you as everything is new and abit overpowering, as they get more confident they will go further. having another dog with you will make it easier as it will probably just want to chase and play Quote Link to post
bryanm45 787
The whole walk will be a training exercise without stress, getting used to the traffic walking to the field let the pup see how the other dogs are not bothered by car noise, once in the field let it go with the other dogs let it meet other dogs that you know take plenty of treats and reassure the pup all the time. Don't make the pup walk too far just 20 mins for mine at the mo. if its raining be carefull in waterlogged fields it doesn't get out of its depth following the other dogs. ATB Bryan. mally 832
I let a pup have about 10 minutes free running twice a day from 12 weeks old (on walks) it's running around the house during the day as well. I don't allow pups to free run with adult dogs as they can really overdo things and get knocked up. I increase the free running as the pup gets older as well as the road walking, although i don't do too much roadwork with a pup under 6-7 months. Feel free to drop me a pm anytime mate. What works for one dog may not work for another, however i don't believe in overdoing it with a pup, if you know your dog's you'll know how much they will take exercise wise mate. Quote Link to post

Cheers, thanks for the advice. I have fields right across the road from my house so can easily do the two short runs and then build up as he gets older. I have had dogs for years, just not had running dogs for years and don't want to mess him up. I want to take things easy to get the best out of him. I had col x greyhounds in the past. 1 Quote Link to post
