Gaz_1989 9,539
This thread is 15 months old My 2 pence worth... It needs to be a strong, well balanced, steady dog with brains, good feet and coat, good nose, stamina and drive. Probably 24"-27" to the shoulder. Breeding doesn't really matter if it meets the above criteria. Collie/bull/grey, saluki/bull/grey, deerhound/collie/grey, beddy/grey. You name it. What they need though is time. Loads of time doing everything. One day running big land in the day, the next mooching, the next ferreting, the next retrieving from the gun, the next night lamping etc etc etc. The conformation and above criteria are born but the all round working lurcher is not born. He is made and shaped over years. My bitch is getting better all the time and she's no spring chicken. But we are out every day or night doing something or other. I class her as an ok all rounder. No world beater but will do whatever I ask of her. People think that if they get the right breeding an all rounder will just run out of the kennel at 12 months old. Then get rid of the dog when it doesn't. 1 Quote Link to post
paulsmithy83 567
Only ever seen one true alrounder that could take all quarry from daytime hare to pearl whites at end of dig or lamp ,wasnt a type of teeth or edible he couldn't take day or night. Was lurcher to lurcher of deer/grey/bedie/grey breeding. Bruva offered 1000's for the dog but the young man didnt wanna part. Quote Link to post

Pleasure to watch him work very rare to know something's dead before the dogs off the slip but he was one of those dogs. Died at 81/2 -9 I think on a fallow stag . Broke his kneck Quote Link to post
