Recommended Posts

ive been taking my ferrets ferreting for a few weeks now and have had no success, im not 100% certain theres rabbits down the holes but im quite certain there is ( as ive seen them outside the holes before) ive been checking my ferrets for blood to see if they've killed them down there and there hasnt been, so why arnt the rabbits coming out?

callum.

could be one or two things, warrens could be too big and rabbits are giving them the run around and also lots of young the now so ferrets may be killing all the young down below

better giving it a miss the now anyway bud and waiting untill September/ October

Could be many things, most wont work ferrets now unless down to pest control jobs etc, how old are the ferrets? if they are all young they may just be working the top layer of the warrens, how long do they go to groung for or are they constantly just in and out of oles pulling nets about? there probably some stubborn does down there with there young not willing to budge, could be any of these!, if you dont have to work them now i would wait till september time.

Keep going mate your bound to get one with the law of averages then hopefully that will be the first of many .But you could be making too much noise then the rabbits wont bolt ?. how olds your ferrets ?. how many ferrets are you using ?to what sized burrows ?.

callum Try to find a small 3-5 holer warren if you can lay your nets over then walk away to find another warren and net that up. then go back to the first one and quietly enter the stinkers out them both in at the start. while they are down back off abit from the ground and stay clear of site from the holes. when you get a rabbit get it out the net and put it down for the ferrets to have a sniff off to start with. when you get home let them have it in their hutch to eat once they have the taste of rabbit they seem to improve massively.

but as stated its getting a bit late for working them at the minute as the does are either pregnant or there are a lot of young about both not good for a days ferreting you can end up with ferrets down for a few days or an injuted ferret from a hard to shift doe most people will have stopped now till september.

Unless you are a paid pest controller mate but going by your post you are obviously not leave it till the end of august/september trying to ferret this time of year comes with a multitude of hassel you will have a lot more success and find it more enjoyable if you wait till then

We do the odd one of job in the summer maybe a big garden etc to gain more permission but it's no fun with layups nettles the heat etc etc

I've no stopped ferreting yet and even the smaller rabbits are flying out the holes im averaging one dig a day a bit less than during the only ferret when there's a "R" in the month . so until you hit a sickner crack on mate enough the learning curve and when you restart next season you will have some good experiences under your belt

you will get some rabbits mate at this time off the year but you will end up doing alot of digging if the ferrets lie up with the young uns, its best to get a ferret finder to use this time of the year, to track where it is to dig the ferret out, atb keep up the good work, tim
