Just been thinking ! If a vixen is shot amd she has cubs what age could they survive from ? Would the dog still look after them, what age could he look after them from? Cheers

Be interesting to know if anyone knows the answer, I suspect it would be to much work for it though. Not saying it would abandon them, cause the dog normally guards the cubs very protectively, but I reckon they would perish.

If the cubs are still dependant on the vixens milk then they'd die, but there's (supposedly) cases where other vixens have been known to suckle orphaned cubs. If the cubs are eating meat when the vixen dies then the dog will provide for them. When I've been following litters of cubs I've often noticed that once they're weaned, the dog seems to take more care of them, bringing food, grooming etc than the vixen.

I've heard of cases in captivity where say a litter sister has took on the role kenny, but would that be feasible in. Wild environment? I dunno mate I'm just interested

That's what I mean scot, animals do behave differently in captivity. And though I've heard of it happening in the wild, I personally think that it would be pretty rare, and more likely to happen where fox numbers are high such as in some urban areas.

As said if there on milk i reckon they would die if there eating meat i reckon the dog could feed them and raise them .Thats when killing lambs and easier stuff is a problem as he needs meat and so much of it ?.
