Guest Leveller
It's a brilliant read only trouble with it is that we don't have half the quarry featured and I've found myself pining after the States Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
its a good book, but i do have reservations about them running three and four dogs on one hare. Quote Link to post
Guest lazylurchers
Good book and good Salukis in it! If it takes that many to get it in the bag then thats what it takes.:ok: Maybe the hares are harder to catch over there. The arabs also hunt with packs as do I most of the time Quote Link to post
smallmouth 1
It's a brilliant read...........I've found myself pining after the States I finished this book the other day. I agree that it's a brilliant read, with some gripping descriptions of courses, and some fair pics of great looking dogs. For me the star of the pics is "Sport" the Coyote Hound, I think I remember seeing his photo in Col Walsh's Lurchers & Londogs? I got more down to earth information about the sighthound breeds from this book than I have from the UK equivalent, Standfast's "Coursing". Mind you the Standfast book is superbly put together, and the artwork is top notch. As for pining for the States, I've long done that, not for quarry variety so much as the impression that there's a much more relaxed attitude toward public hunting access on the land. There certainly is in US fishing, buy a state game licence and a Gazeteer, hire an SUV and the land of the free is your playground............. By comparision we're all stuck in the metephorical lift in this overpopulated island, squashed up together elbowing your neighbours, forced to breath each other's farts . I think that's why the UK anti's are that much more active........... Quote Link to post
Guest BORDERFOX
very overrated i think Seems to bung his quarry up too much and his dogs are all awesome etc etc. Ive only had a couple of reads but Ive a horrid feeling hes a bit ......"plummer" Quote Link to post
badger 91
borderfox, you might have read the man wrong, he seems a good guy that likes to course. I have a dog he bred, a salukixstagxcoldblood that I bought out of the field in New Mexico. This dog doesn't need three friends to catch a "hare." And our Jack rabbits have been selected by coyotes(small wolves that eat foxes) for their selection of the fittest, your hare have been selected by fox for the last 500 years or so if I'm not mistaken. Which do you think would be harder to catch? cheers, bob Quote Link to post
Kye 77
Having hunted BOTH UK hares, and Jack rabbits, i would say the Jack rabbit is slightly harder to catch...i put it down to the VAST amount of predators out here...Hawks, eagles, two types of fox, Bobcat, Couger, two types of wolf, coyote..etc. Plus there is NO closed season, or bag limit, so they are pursued, buy many, all year around. (Not buy myself however) The terrain is also a main facter...running through acres of rock and cactus, is hardly what you want your dog doing for 4-5 minutes. Im not saying i agree with running a few dogs on a hare, each to there own. But imo, we shouldnt realy nock what other people do in another country...I think people should just stick to what they beleave...I have seen the white dog Badger is on about, and he is a nice dog...he looks like a lot of the dogs back home to me...As for wanting to live in the states...I would say the general opinion on hunting overhere is fantastic..DEPENDING on where you live....where Badger lives, your a freak if you havent got staghounds, or beagles in the back of the truck...in Seatle, washington, there all bunny-hugging, hippies!..lol. The hunting here is very good, BUT it depends on where you live!...At the moment i am VERY challenged for digging, but its quite good for running dogs...where Badger is, its a houndsmens paradise...in Ohio, you nedd a kennel of about 15 terriers to get all the digging done!...it varies so much...and from what i have heard about Mr Salmons dogs, they are very good..i want to move to NM, but the wife 'aint keen!..lol...its as flat as a bloody pancake!..lol. all the best Kye..
