matt1979 766
Just wondering if anyone has any experience of a bouvier type lurcher, as i know there are a few out there albeit very few. I have owned a bouvier for 6 years and she is a great dog, was wondering how they would turn out with a greyhound or similar x in the mix. An honest assessment of the bouvier would be, benefits, good chase instinct, solid and athletic, very trainable, good nose, good feet and very sound temperament. On the negative side, i would say lacks speed (obviously), strong guarding instinct (which may be a positive but isnt really a requirement for a lurcher), square shape (short back) and dodgy tail. As many other herding breeds are used in the lurcher i was interested in why they havent or have been used. Your thoughts or better still experiences of this cross would be appreciated and NO i am not looking to breed my bitch this way just curious and to save the rubbish written about the Bouvier being a big heavy useless show dog, yes there are some this way, but the original breed is much slighter and more agile, as is my bitch breed from imported working stock, she is 24tts and ways 33kg. I have attached a link for those who dont know what i am talking about i.e. what a bouvier is, apologies it contains some rubbish but some decent stuff as well. Cheers. Quote Link to post
Bosun11 537
A breed i've never thought about for Lurcher production Matt. Though it's a breed I don't know much about. I'd betcha if someone trys it they could advertise 'em in the CMW as 'authentic Smithfields' and make a fecking packet..!! Quote Link to post
matt1979 766
I beleive a gamekeeper in Scotland breed a Greyhound x Bouvier litter last year and they were advertised in CMW, but he was honest about what they were lol i think he used his bouvier for tracking deer etc if i remember write, he has written a few articles about his bitch, but sadly never about the pups. asanley 1,009
I can,t think of any reason why they wouldn,t make a handy dog , be interesting to see if anyone has experience of one . Quote Link to post
gnipper 6,737
No reason why they shouldn't be useful, there's picardy, poodle and god knows what else crosses out there. I've just got an accident which is half brittany and i'm hoping that turns out handy. Quote Link to post

samstorm 34
the litter that was in the cmw, i know the lass who owns the sire to them. she took a pup on. its turned into quite a good looking dog. quik pace well set slight rough jacket, im sure the fellow that bred them MW will write about them as he kept 1 or 2 back and im sure his plan is to breed a 1/4cross. theres also one down south thats already doing the business on all game. so all in all it cant be bad. 1 Quote Link to post

matt1979 766
Thanks for the responses fellas, i look forward to any future CMW articles about those pups. Chart, i think its probably a while back since any hound blood made it into the bouvier as most can be traced back to a handful of dogs left after the war, as you probably know they were messenger dogs so were pretty much wiped out, but having grown up with sighthounds and now had a Bouvier for 6 years there are definate similarities in temperament (chilled out indoors, happy to sleep alot and chase anything that moves as a pup lol) but there are obvious differences as well. Any more info fellas keep it coming thanks again. Quote Link to post
