Young hunters

Recommended Posts

As a young hunter myself, i often find it hard to get permission to ferret anywhere unless i know the person well. i have done a good job of reducing the numbers of rabbits in the permission and never once had a complaint from the property owner, and they've always been pleased with the numbers of rabbits i get.

ive been out asking for permission a couple of times; dressed smartly and been very polite.. only to be sucessful on one occasion.

does anyboody else find it difficult?

personally, i think as im young, im not being taken seriously by the people who i have asked. Or perhaps they wouldnt trust me as im still young (18) and as you all know, everybody thinks us kids are thugs these days :(

im starting to become quite disheartened by it and i know that if i didnt love hunting this much, it would probably of stopped me trying by now.

ive got a permission letter written up, and im going to try and hand it out this week to different farms and things this week.. so lets see how it goes!

How do you go about asking the farmer? Do you just knock on his door? I'm very new to ferreting and the whole hunting scene and done all my ferreting on the same old public land round the back of the cemetry. Desperate to get some permission but dont know what to say when the farmer opens his door.

Welcome to the world of knockbacks! More often than not you will get knocked back around the areas we hunt, and have hunted. Farmers have got to the point where they are sick of blokes knocking on there doors asking.

Dont give up. Be polite, dont hassle them at home, dont pressure them, maybee leave your number incase they ever need a rabbiter.

It rarely comes on a plate.

Being very honest, thats just the way it is. As Brimmer says, a lot of folk are out looking, its very difficult to get a foot in the door. Its usually who you know.

Get yourself some cards, i've had no said to me, left a card then got a call a couple of months later when either they are having problems, or the usual guys have given up etc.

Even with the idea of going from neighbour to neighbour eventually you still run out of land and bunnies if you are doing a good job.

But its just as bad when you get older.

Do you have a local rural neighbour hood watch group in your area if yes find out when where and who the local chair is.

Attend the meetings normally ever months I can be 100% sure that you will have local farmers attending and by showing a intrests in rural crime in your area they will see you as a decent young fellow .

The sort of lad they would like on there land and trust with time you will get your moment to let them know your a keen ferretter.

Just a little trick but not ever area has a ative NAG group.

You sound a decent lad mate and decency and manners count for a lot. As said you'll get knockbacks but at some point a door will open that will open another and you'll find it easier to get permission once you've got a bit under your belt.

Keep knocking on the doors, being polite and once you get your bit do a decent job, let the farmer know what you've done after each trip, word will spread and the snowball will start.

All the very best to you mate.
