darbo 4,779
train her in a bocked off area preferably where her bed is. so she has nowhere to go except back to you. pups will instinctivlycarry objects back to their bed. dont be in a rush to take it from her. plenty praise and dont do it too often. seen quite a few pups sicken of retrieve training by doing too much. then progress fron there once the habit is established. good luck. Casso 1,264
got a pup 5 months old had her for about 6 weeks know and has been reteiving everything straight back to me toys and balls was great ... now last few days shes starting to come short or go past and play with the ball any suggestions ... should i just leave here for a days and start a fresh in the week ?? any help would be great try to make the pup believe that coming back to you with the item means another item comes to life in your hands, 2 items are needed for this, dont worry bout taking the first item as the man said, when i work with pups, i make them come into my space sometimes jump up on me to throw an item for them, it leaves them with no fear for the retrieve later on where a lot of mutts fail at the last few feet when working its the energy you create in the item the dog should be looking for not the item itself, bringing the item back to you should give rise to more energy in the dogs mind, meaning bringing the first back equates getting to race after the second, when you throw the first leg it with the second, your running action will generate the chase action in the pup, let him chase you down hopefully with the first in his gob, when he gets to you make him work for the second, this is where i first start installing instruction to a pup, i have something he wants badly, heel is a good one, have him walk beside you after you give him the instruction, after a few meters tell him yes and throw the second, a mindset begins to form in the pup that listening to your instruction what ever the command is, is how he gets what he wants in the field, its the start of the working relationship, best of luck, keep games short, always leave him wanting more, Quote Link to post
