Has Any Coursing Competition Had More Depth Than the 2000Forley?

Recommended Posts

Question for the followers of coursing,[preban],has any competition had the depth of quality of the 2000 Millenium Forley Cup?

I M O. Any of the finalists would have been worthy winners.

Some that did not make the final included M P's Lucky, and T G's pure saluki, top class dogs in their own right..

After Alan Tyer handed the Cup to Alan Sankey, owner of the winner , that wonderful bitch Blondie, I asked Geoff Ogden if he had seen dogs as good before that day?

He replied," I've seen dogs as good ,but never as many in one place".

My mate Gary D was a finalist ,with his fast, and deadly dog Red,I offered my commiserations to him after the day, he said," I think Blondie deserved to win , I can't fault her".

Those that were there will remember the day, I count it a privilege to have been among them.

I'm sure Alan learnt his trade with Racing Whippets, he sure knew how to get a dog ready !! The good old days !!!

Cheers.

Alan was just a youngin when I moved to Ashington from Bedlington, he had lurchers then..It might have been his dad Dicky that had whippets, or even his granddad..

chartpolski did you ever run whippets at Newsham..my dad ran them in the early 50`s, Bedlington, Netherton and Ashington on Green Lane

Bill, Alan had a dog called Buechephalus, a non ped whippet, and a very handy one it was !!

I ran at North Seaton, Ashington, Bedlington, but my main tracks were Coxslodge and Wallsend Rising Sun, where I was Handicapper ! I also helped start Killingworth track, but in thehayday of Whippet racing I travelled the country, we used to get a mini bus from Ashington, which picked up in Bedlington, Cramlington and Benton, then went on down to Ripon on a friday night to have a drink with the "real" Whippet guys !! LOL !! Great days !!

Cheersw.

I raced in the late 60's, I had my first Whippet, Blue Prince, (Blue Boy X Zarwood), around 68. Ask Alan about Buechephalus, I;ve never met the guy, but remember the dog !

Now we are talking dogs...The assassin was a lurcher, half brother to my old bitch Bes owned by Ron Murray, he was half deerhound/greyhound out of Dukes big Blue dog in Bedlington, and Watsons (from the paper shop in Bedlington) lurcher, thought to be a collie cross..the assassin was the best male lurcher to come out of Ashington, for hares deer and fox in the 80`s..the Widdrington train was over rated, but, a decent dog..seen them all, ran with most of the best lurchers around there at that time..
