Mosby 355
I think this topic is too good to get lost in the past topics. Come on ya'll who have bred your own dogs for sometime. What are your percentages. I don't want to name anybody but I know there are some guys who have been in the game a while. I wanna know what I can expect in the future with my litters. 1 Quote Link to post
lukey 1,621
Good wee read this, imo the only people who can really comment are those who breed and keep full litters. I know not everyone can do this but passing pups on to mates and mates of mates how can you be 100percent that the feed back your getting is the truth? Everyone has diff standards, only the most honest of men will reAlly find out what they hve in there yard and I mean honest to themselfs. I would be happy to breed a litter and get 1 or 2 decent dogs but I'd only be happy knowing that the shite was weeded out and delt with Quote Link to post
Cleanspade 3,324
it seems that a lot has changed since a well known breeder stated ...........if it dont go at nine months. it'll go at twelve.........sometimes its the silence that speaks volumes. Quote Link to post

tinytiger 872
whats your view on it Clean spade? if i was looking for top grade digging terriers. i think i would be more than happy if i produced one good dog out of five. good fox bolting terriers i'd be looking for at least 50/50.if not more. and for an all round terrier for pesting. rat rabbit and bolt the odd fox. i would be wanting two out of three to be up to scratch. the qualities needed for a good digging terrier that will work for many years are far more difficult to breed than the latter i m o. so i would have to agree with DEALER. i have seen whole litters work to a reasonable standard. but not a whole litter that are all of a high standard. and i would hazard a guess that if folk could consistantly produce high percentages . a lot of folk would lose interest as the challange would not be the same. luckily i dont need this so would be content with 50/50. The litter that were double bred off my old bitch jazz (1/4 pitbull)-all 5 of them are working -id say 2 of them are top class,1 is two big to get to ground but is excellent in cover, retrieves from water, excellent nose-the other 2 are o.k ,no world beaters but no curs..If you look at greyhounds ,i can think of a litter where 8 out of 10 broke 28.(ardfert billys one)-they repeated the mating 3 times and everyone of them were dirt-hard to know -theres a lot of luck involved as well.I think the chances of a dog turning out itself are something like 1 in 55 billion(39 to the power of itself) ,5 pups is a pretty small sample out of that number. If you breed close to very good dogs ,you shorten the odds-hard to know how much by though.
