scothunter 12,609
guy drowned tried to save his dog when it fell through the ice last night. tried going out on a inflatable lilo.seemingly he got to it,but the dog burst it. had a similar thing happen to me last year, fortunaetly he got back to the bank.as much as im fond of my dogs, there no way i would attempt to go onto ice for a dog. very sad the guy was only 37 and his dad was there and witnessed it. Baghdadnights 150
Sadly this happens every year and generally the dogs always get out by themselves. Thing is most times the owners either encourage the dog onto the ice throwing sticks or balls or just let them run free onto it. We've a lake near us that often freezes over never let my dogs near it just incase

martnmagik 68
had the same last year too with one of mine on my lake, luckily the broken canoe i meant to get shut of was still lying around in the grass to the side so i gently slid out on it on my belly. and managed to scruff the mutt and chuck her back onto the thicker ice so she could climb out. and like a knob i didnt think about turning round to get myself back and ended up chest deep in the water. fook me ive never lost my breath like that before let alone panic and flap like a retarded octopus having a fit. but all was well in the end. sympathy to the family who lost the lad, what a shit way to go

Lab 10,979
Seen alot of people basically risking there dogs life sending them onto the ice to retrieve game. I won't do it cause I couldn't stand back and watch my dog drown knowing I sent it out there. Not worth loosing a dog just to retrieve a bird.

terrier s 123
sad news,i have seem people throwing a stick onto ice in local dam for the dog to retrive the last two years people have lost dogs in the dam doing so i personally keep my dogs away from frozen water just not worth the chance losing a dog or your own life.

lurchergrrl 1,441
fook me ive never lost my breath like that before let alone panic and flap like a retarded octopus having a fit. I know it isn't really funny but that cracked me up  I fell out of a canoe into a thawing lake once (clever idea, to canoe through the ice). Never known anything like that feeling: heart stopping cold, gasping, sinking in layers of clothing, big winter boots on... the panic was total. Thankfully we were close enough to the dock I was able to get out with the help of my equally drunken friends Two years ago the whippet ran out onto the frozen canal after a bloody bird - lept right off the side like he was possessed, landed with an almighty thud and scudded across the ice. Thought for sure he'd crack it and go under. He didn't tho, and lesson learned. Never ever off lead near any frozen water.
