rob190364 2,594
Went for a wander round my new permission yesterday, Tilly and jill in tow. It was more of a look round than a big session as I had to be back for lunchtime. There are a couple of really big fields that are going to be great for lamping, 3 or 4 times the size of the fields we've been working previously. There were a fair few sets but not many that were occupied. Tilly gave a good mark at the base of a tree stump and there were only three exits so couple of minutes later it's all netted up and in goes the jill, it wasn't just a few bumps....it was like a full on riot erupted under there and a few seconds more of very loud banging out bursts a big buck rabbit into the net, quickly dispatched and out pops the jill covered in mud. Rabbit was well over twice the size of my jill and looks like it gave her a good little scrap. Slipped under the hedge into the next field only to be greeted by about 30 young cows, it's kind of difficult to be stealthy when you have 120 hooves walking right behind you all the way round the field!!!! On to the next few fields, a couple of rabbits hugging the hedge but disappearing into cover and not going to ground. Plenty of pheasants about though but Tilly hasn't quite mastered the nack of taking them before they take off. There's plenty of signs of rabbits around but not a lot to ground yet. Should be quite good once the frosts have kicked in though. Just before getting back to the car Tilly shows a lot of interest in a pile of hay bales and there's quite a bit opening one end, looks like it might be holding a bunny or two. Enter jill, she's chasing something around the bales for a good couple of minutes, but as the rabbit bolts me and Tilly are on the wrong side of the hay.........she put a really good run in though and just missed it before it shot through a hedge into a warren on a neigbouring farm (he'll be getting a knock next time). So, did more walking than actual ferreting and came away with only one rabbit but we had a decent day. Was going to take pics but the battery had gone on my phone (Samsung Galaxy S have the shittest battery life of anything that has ever existed!). 1 Quote Link to post
