First day out in a while

Since starting a new job ive struggled to get out ferreting as much, there are good points to being unemployed :D ...Today i thought id go try a new permisson i got a couple weeks ago, also first chance i got to try new mk3 finder.

I know the ferret finders are a must but first impressions are they are nippy as f**k,the collar was tight a possible but was still able to slide off the jills neck/head,then everytime the jill touched the net the collar would catch it and tangle the net,ill get abit stick here probaly but i ended up putting the finder back in the van and ferreted without it.Ive been lucky all times ive been out ferreting so far and never needed the finder,i will keep trying to use it and maybe when the time comes and i need to dig i might appreciate it more.

I took out the 2 jills (nippy and jinky) and since the hob (wallace) is nearly out of season i thought its time he got a chance after being stuck in the hutch since march except one previous attempt to work when he was in season. The two jills managed to get 3 between them and after a slow start the hob got back into working and got another 4,could have been 5 but one got away..

7 on the new permission after 4 hours was no bad and theres still loads of the wee fuckers about,so should be kept busy for a while yet.

The land owner was asking if i wanted to shoot the pigeons,so ill have to invest in something like a 22 sometime soon,if anyone has a old one kicking about they are willing to loan out would be appreciated(few tins or bottle in it) and if anythings damaged etc ofcourse id pay.(worth a try)

Glad you got out! :good:

Nothing worse than a loose collar, I only use them now and again. I've had tree digs in 4 years to my albino jill, and two of those were to loose collars. :( One through 4ft of rab and one 4ft through the roots of a holly tree. :wallbash::thumbs:

Don,t use a finder myself, maybe you could just have a ferret and the finder on stand by so if you do get a lie up you can stick the collar on the extra ferret and send it down :hmm::thumbs:

That's the way I prefer to use them if I'm out with somebody who's got one.:thumbs:

Make another eye hole in the middle of the two originals on your collar, once you get the collar on, cut off the excess length of collar, bingo, ferret runs through your nets without disturbance, I collar all my ferrets when they're under ground, but rarely need to use the locator to find them, once you know an animal fairly well, then you know when they're stuck, well done on the 7

as stelthy says just add a couple of extra holes youd be suprised how tight they need to be if you can force your finger under the collar you arnt tight enough. once you have that sorted just cut of the excess so that it cannot interfere with the nets. after a while they become used to walking through the nets with the collar. but like i said they need to be fitted right otherwise you will be digging to just the collar. keep at it mate it will put a few more rabbits in the bag for you. glad to hear that you had a good day all the same atb for the season
