skycat 6,174
I've answered you pm, but I'll copy and paste my reply on here as well. Probably! If the dog is yapping when there's a bit of ground between it and its prey, then it is probably yapping in frustration thinking the prey will get away. Yapping is dog speak for "oh shit! I can't catch this damn thing!" Zapping it will give it a damn good reason to stop running. Not only can it not catch what it is chasing, but if there's pain involved as well......well, what would you do in the same situation? You're chasing something, can't catch it, then someone delivers an electric shock to you at the same time................if that was me I'd quit chasing! In fairness to you, I should have asked what breeding is in the dog? How old it is etc etc. Does it ever catch what it is chasing after it has been yapping? And what quarry are we talking about? Some dogs just yap on really exciting quarry: fox, deer. Other's just do it on anything cos its in their breeding: the most likely dogs to do it are Whippet crosses, terrier crosses, though some Collie crosses do it as well if they have been over faced when young. some dogs do it when they know the prey is going to get away, others just do it through excitement. Either way its a problem if you're trying to be quiet: not on permission, or trying not to scare other game away. If the dog is still young, what age was it entered? Too young, and they can yap as they're not up to the job, and the habit stays even if they do start catching. If that was the case, then the only way you can hope to 'cure' it is to stop running it in situations where it can't catch, go back to basics: bolt rabbits with ferrets where the dog is right on top of the rabbit and can't really miss. WILF 51,127
As always, good reply Skycat but I think its a polite way of saying "your f****d".........when I asked the op the breeding of the dog I pretty much knew before he replied to me that it would have beddy in there.......its a trait and theres not much you can do about genetics. If he works places that it dont matter then its no problem........ Quote Link to post

skycat 6,174
I just saw that there's another thread on the same dog: it would seem that its just the odd yap on the turn: frustration, a sort of "Shit! I've missed it" bark. More success and being careful to run the dog in the right situations and try to avoid impossible rabbits might bring the confidence up. I've had the odd dog which did that: as their confidence and experience grew, so the noise went away. Quote Link to post
