Born Hunter 17,960
I think one of the great things about ferreting is the variety of different ways of bagging the bolted rabbits. Shooting, running them with lurchers, hawks, long nets and the humble purse net are the main methods that come to mind but Im sure there are a few more less common ways. So whats your favourite? Ideation 8,217
I do like to see the dogs make a catch, always a great sight, but on most of the land we work it's higly impracticle to just run the dogs, you would catch very few (nature of the land), and i do really really take pleasure in the art of setting purse nets, quickly, efficiently and well, lovely to see a rabbit going no where. So i guess for me it's purse nets and dog to mop up anything else. I love the days when nothing that bolts gets missed between the two. 2 Quote Link to post
Born Hunter 17,960
Sounds similar to most of the land I work. I've made the odd purse net and there is something very satisfying netting a small open warren with new hand made nets and watching a coney purse up real nice in it. Long netting a big spot is great fun too but I only run the big net out on places that need it. The lads I go out with always want me to run it out but its a ball ache through hawthorn and blackthorn and often completely unnecessary. Shooting the bolters was something I did alot with an old ferreting partner and we really bagged up on that particular land and it was great sport. But shot up rabbits are usually only good for the ferrets! Not to mention that these days my shooting is bloody awfull! lol Quote Link to post
max abell 198
The biggest buzz to me is when a rabbit hits a well placed purse net although we catch loads in the long nets lamp hundreds and watch dogs mark and catch it takes me back to when i started 30 odd yrs ago when purse nets was all we had as kids loved it then still love it now Quote Link to post

theferreter 311
purse nets bolting them for the dogs bolting them till the gun Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,217
Never really enjoyed using the gun, it's ok, but the noise etc, kind of takes the quiet pleasure out of it for me. I love working the dog, ferrets and myself in harmony. I'd also rather hunt up woodland, or mountain land, find sets, get marks with the dog, put stuff to ground and ferret it out etc, then do big hedge rows on flat fields, no matter how much bigger the bag is. The one 8,593
Purse netting them i get a buzz out of ferreting them and catching them in a home made net is a bonus . But just going out and getting a rabbit either shooting ,snaring, longnetting etc is great Quote Link to post
