doddsy1970 9
This story starts in late December when my father in law, a friend and myself ferreted a long bank full of brambles and tree roots. It was impossible to net up so we had 2 100yd longnets on the bottom and shotgun on the top. While we were setting up it was noticed that one of the ferret boxes had come unfastened and that the ferets were running free. There were 3 ferrets in it but we could only find 2. We hunted high and low but could not find it anywhere so we assumed that the ferret had gone to ground down one of the numerous holes and that it would surface later. To cut a long story short we did not find the ferret and i thought it may have crossed the road when it got free. I returned for the next few days leaving food and a box hoping to see it curled up in the box but it was not to be and I consigned myself to commiting the cardinal sin of ferreting and losing one of my ferrets............... I got a phone call at lunch time today from the farmer saying that he had spotted my ferret in exactly the same place as we were ferreting, so i rushed over there and after half an hour looking and calling, out popped this little head. I went over to her and picked her up and checked her over and apart from a few ticks and fleas she was in excellent health. She is now back in her cage with the other jills and as happy as larry as am i. She has been free for over 3 months and the only thing wrong with her was a few ticks and fleas, she is stil very friendly and easily handled, she has also come into season. Do you think this could be the same ferret or another that someone else has lost? Quote Link to post

Guest Ditch_Shitter
200 yards of rabbit holes? Why should she go elsewhere? It's quite possible, of course, that she had indeed sloped off somewhere on the first day. Ferrets will follow and hunt a scent over land just as readily as down holes, of course. Then, what ever she set out to do being done, she'd likely hunt the area and would thus find that bank again. I think the only things to stop people finding their lost ferrets in the area they loose them are man. Man laying a Fenn trap. Man simply finding the ferret before you and taking it home. Or man driving a vehicle. Otherwise they're perfectly capable of getting on in the wild. Ask any Kiwi! Quote Link to post
