BSA Scorpian SE .22 Chrono.

Recommended Posts

Hi All.

Well, I have put about 800 pellets through the SE now, so thought I would have her over the Chrono for a look.

Considering this is a non regd rifle straight out of the box, with no tuning, I was happy with the results.

I have found with my rifle, that she prefers a 200 Bar fill, rather than the reccomended 232 Bar.

From the 200 Bar fill, down to 90 Bar, the rifle returned a shot count of 110.

If my sums are right, she is giving an avg MV of 547.68 = 10.59ftlbs.

Idealy I would like to get this up to around the 567 mark returning approx 11.35ftlb.

From the lowest reading of 515 to the highest of 561 there is a difference of 46fps = 0.07ftlb so not too bad at all.

Maths is not my strong point but I think I have this near as damn it

Might be of use to other SE owners to compare and ponder over :hmm:

Hi Bill,

Brilliant post mate

About 180 bar to 90 bar seems the best and straighest power curve for your rifle mate.

Between them pressures you are only getting a 21 fps variation and thats over around 80 shots so pretty awesome for a self regulating rifle. Some of the figures could also be down to slight change in pellet weight and not your rifle etc so really good results i think mate.

On 180 bar you would still get around 80 full power shots mate at a very consistant level and noone can shoot 80 rabbits on a night and carry them around  .

I chronoed my .177 version on Andys Skan but we only did the first 20 shots and not the whole charge so this info is good.

If i remember right we had a total variation of 5 or 7 fps over 20 shots with AA Fields and a power of 11 something (results on my other pc back in the UK  ).

I may also try a 180 bar fill, zero the SE and see how she does .

I think that i should still get around 60 or 70 full power shots in .177 from 180 bar.

Hi Bill, did a couple of chrono tests with my HW100 and found my rifle was running around the similar ft/lb mark as your BSA Scorpion SE until I used my Napier Pull Through Kit after which it rose to 11.6ft/lb using the same pellets. Might be worth mopping the barrel out and running a short string over the chrono to see if it makes a difference for you?

I did a couple of YouTube vids for mine to show the difference of using the Napier Pull Through. Not the most exciting videos to watch but it proves the point :tongue2:

Hi Si.

Glad you found it interesting

Hopefully......... as the SE is the new boy on the block, all these little bits n bobs in the posts from different people will prove usfull to new owners of the SE.

Finding out all the little quirks etc, and comparing notes.

Your spot on with the figures and pressures there mate

The pellets were straight from the tin, not wieghed, so even more impressive results I think.

Cant put this rifle down, loving it

Be interesting to see if yours prefers the 180 fill aswell :hmm:

Do not forget Bill she won't really settle down and start giving her all until you have put a fair few hundred through her! So keep an eye on it and it might just get up a bit higher!

Hi Mike.

I have put about a 1000 pellets through her now, including the chrono I have just completed.

To be honest I think most of the rough edges are seen to now.

A spring rifle will bennifit from a good bedding in, but with a PCP the power does not really increase that much with use, air pressure remains constant within the rifle, the hammer hitting the valve may smooth out a bit, but thats all really.

Will try her again in a bit.

Ill let you know Bill when i get back in the middle of October.

I left my F1 chrono down at Andys so when he comes up to mine with Davy for the weekend when Im back Ill ask him to bring it with him and maybe we will be able to do a test at 180 bar and see how she does over 50 to 60 shots.

I know that just before i came back to Canada and i had all my rifles at my house (now they are all locked away in a mates gun cabinets at his house waiting for my return) less LJ's Ultra that she is using to kill those bloody crows and squizzers that keep wrecking my bird feeders :censored:

I was playing about with the SE on one of the allotments i shoot bunnies on, just shooting 5 shot groups to see how she was shooting now the barrel was all clean, the back stop was a piece of 4 miker from a old kitchen top at 30 metres (32 yards).

A fly landed on the back stop so i flicked the cross hair onto it and slipped the second stage.

The fly exploded in a mass of yellow and red on the back stop. I was well impressed with her.

Its just a totally new rifle now ive got the BSA VC silencer fitted to her and the barrel as had a good pull through with Davys cleaning kit then mine when i got home from Brighton.

When i get back in Oct Im going to take her down to Swindon one Sunday and give her a run out against Davys AAS410 and Andys BSA r10 mark 2 which are both brilliant rilfes to see how she competes against them.

I think that she will be do herself proud if i do my bit.

They are just so good its unbelievable, well worth the £ i paid for mine.

Hi Si.

Glad you have left LJ to keep a grip on the table wreckers

When you go to Swindon and visit Davy and Andy, be gentle with them  I dont think you need have worries about the performance of the SE or yourself.

Although you may have a problem prising the SE out of their hands if you let them try it out :laugh:

This is a big leap forward for BSA after some of the problems they had with a few of the R10s.

Nice shot on the fly by the way........I did the same with a Midge at 50yds :tongue2: :tongue2:   :whistling:

I bet they'd be one hell of a rifle tuned (if they even need tuning?!). Would like to see the result of a tench reg fitted.. they really would take some beating :gunsmilie:

Hi Elliott,

They are brilliant rifles straight out te box once the barrel has been cleaned as its really dirty when new from the factory.

I reckon with a Tench reg in it it would be just about the perfect rifle.
