Jamie m 668
Theres working and then theres working! Not all ferrets graft to the standard expected. And if anyone says different they either havnt seen many ferrets work and been a bit lucky or have low standards. The difference between a pet ferret and a 100% working ferret is that a pet will still be kept even if its found lacking, a ferret kept 100% for work that is shite wont be tollerated and certainly WONT be bred from 'because its cute'! How many times have you picked a ferret up after having bolted a few rabbits and doubted whether the ferret was lying to you about there being no more at home, refusing to re enter for any length of time? Enter a seasoned warrior and watch that remaining stubborn buck fly out like his arse is on fire! How many people have had a ferret surface after 5....10 mins of being at a stop end on one bottled up and said "shes/hes killed it"? Dig down, even if its 5 foot, as I have and find a rabbit with a few scratches on its arse but still very much alive! Or drop another ferret in and get a bolt! A worker should be just as tame and easy to handle as a pet! More so infact as often they have to be handled when fired up and grabbed in haste with no fear of getting bitten. Many times I have tossed my ferret a short distance to my ferreting partner and it doesnt phase them at all! Stop kidding yourselves people and be honest about the standard of your ferrets. Far too many people think they have a decent ferret that is worth breeding from just because it has bolted a few rabbits and doesnt try to savage your hand! well put born hunter saves me tapping at the keys for half an hour and as you've said if you don't see other ferrets work atall how can you judge your own ??? robbo 874
i got three off someone who had kept them as pets for three years .one did bolt a few rabbits but i wouldnt say it worked, the other two were completely disinterested so not all ferrets are workers. the only thing you can do is give it a try. stealthy1 3,964
To all you good old hunting boys out there what is the feeling of using so called pet ferrets for working, surely every ferret will work its little butt off wont they? Put a couple down and silence the doubters, only do small warrens to start them off, let us know how you get on Quote Link to post
air gun ant 1,666
I got given two pet ferrets 2 years ago and thought I'd give them the benefit of the Dought. At first Niether of them had any intrest what so ever just messing roud in the burys I knew there were rabbits in as I had watcher them run in when walking to the holes! Eventually a couple of trips later 1 of them started bolting bunnies for fun, like switch was flicked in his head, his now my best worker without a Dought, and will not surface until the warren is empty or every rabbit is dead! The other went to be a pet at a friend of a friends. Some will some won't but give them a chance, it might not be instant but worth a go Good luck and atb Ant ;-) Quote Link to post
