wild rover 548
hi, my saluki x will retieve straight away on the lamp, or on the field or ferreting, but as soon as terriers are involved in and around bushes, he wont bring it baack, he doesnt chew it up or nothing like that he just wont bring it to me if the terriers are around, any info or help please. thanks. Go back to basic dummy retrieving on its own, then if retrieving ok, get someone to stand with the terriers behind you, when its retrieving with them there, bring them closer each time, until it becomes used to doing it with other dogs there. Never let the terriers runalong side him or try to fight over it, it can ruin retrieving. Persevere until he retrieves with dogs in close proximity, it may be hes jealous or frightend of the terriers, good luck mate. Quote Link to post
skycat 6,174
Added to that: GOOD LUCK!!! Great advice, but so many Saluk types are ultra possessive and won't retrieve if any dog is near by: my other dogs know not to interfere with a retrieve but it still puts them off: unless you can teach your terriers to drop out of sight when this happens..........and you'll be a better dog trainer than I could ever be.......you'll have to accept that the dog doesn't retrieve when there's others around. Judging by your last few topics the dog will spend so much time in the whelping box it wont get much chance to do any retreiving so I wouldnt worry about it Quote Link to post

Guest born to run1083
mate not hear to ruin your thread but I'm not 100% but if memory serves me right you said you can catch 16 hares in the lamp but need simple advice on retrieving, doesn't make sense lol but any way as some said back to basics again and it's not uncommon for dogs retrieve to go tits up when other dogs on the scene all this is basic thought you would of known this? Gaz_1989 9,539
That's the problem with this site. One lad has a pop at another and every f****r else joins in. No truth in what is being spouted about, just having a dig "because someone else did". Fair play for apologising. And the first few posts sounded good advise. Im struggling with my saluki cross retrieving full stop. Good luck. Gaz Quote Link to post
Guest FTBBTH
cheers gaz, have you tried letting a dropper go for yours in an open field by himself with just you? thats how i did it, live to hand, its just terriers! Quote Link to post
