I was made up for West Ham fans last week when I read that he was on the verge of a transfer out of the club...

Im no big fan of the lad but in all honesty i,ll be glad if he stays, infact i,ll be glad of any premiership players staying......we got to face it we,re championship level now and although on the last few years form Cole is not premiership quality he,s certainly capable....personally i think he might do well in this league it might be just what a few of our players need for their confidence, not that im thinking its going to be plain sailing, but players like Cole at this stage are likely to be good championship level players.

Now im over the initial shock and upset of going down im really looking forward to the new season

Sorry Gnasher, but I have to disagree with you about Cole mate, I played that position all my playing career, obviously not at that level, but I do know about playing striker.

I used to spend hours studying all the great strikers of my time and the not so great, watching them play on video (sad huh).

I have to tell you mate, the chance of getting 5 million for him would have been like winning the lotto!!

I can 100% tell you he is absolutely not striker material in any way, shape or form.

He lacks the little "something" that is the difference between consistantly scoring and making a back four worry and being a player that may get the odd scrap of a goal.

In laymen terms, his is useless......aggression, strength, heart, passion, confidence and the bare faced cheek to try the outrageous now and again + just knowing where the goal is, is what makes a true centre forward and Cole has none of these attributes IMHO.

I respect your opinion Wilf and i do know from previous posts your not his biggest fan to say the least :D .....but to say he is not capable or useless,i think your wrong mate..........at the highest level of any sport theres a fine line between ability and performance, you can have all the ability in the world with no performance....but you just cant have consistent good performance with no ability.....now,Carlton Cole didnt reach the very top of his profession by having no ability......at Chelsea Ranieri called him " the best young talent he had ever coached "....now while i accept that is probably a bit strong i do believe he has ability......he didnt suddenly join West Ham and become a bad footballer, also Wilf....we could have Rooney or Ronaldo up front if we dont create chances and dont play good football those players will come deeper and deeper in desperation to get into the game to the point where eventually your centre forwards not playing as an out and out centre forward !

I dont believe a professional footballer can bullshit his way through to the highest level of the game....there has to be something there, whether thats premier league level in his case im not so sure....but theres definately something there,as there is with Matt Upson,Jimmy Tompkins Freddie Sears and a whole bunch of others who currently do not perform like premiership footballers.

Dont forget this was a side with 5 England internationals...more than any other premiership side !...you cant tell me they are all useless.

Of all the players you could name....Jason Lee was from my manor....as a kid all he had was size,he would win everything in the air and was quite formidable for other kids to play against because of his size and strength......but on the deck yes he wasnt great, didnt help of course when he grew a pineapple on his nut :D ....but....even he had something that got him to the level he played at,not fancy skills no....but who said ability has to be purely about how good you are with a ball at your feet....you wouldnt call Tony Adams a good footballer but he was a great player.
