baz 464
got to agree with the saluki boys....the rule the coursing world and always will.....years of breeding to get a dog that can run 5 strong winter hares...they are saturated with saluki.. Quote Link to post
inan 841
Deer grey cant stay enough to run 3 good winter hares , not saying they wont catch a hare , just not good at it ........ id match my deerhound/greyhound on any breed , its not the breed , its the heart , i have a little 18'' whippet which runs round colliexgreyhounds ect round this way , depends on how hard your dog works , my deerhound/greyhound would run hare after hare , not bigging myself / my dog up but i just know what my dog can do , you cant say deerhound x 's are useless , ect , they are adapted and can run any land , at end of day its all down to what dog suits you , same as i wouldnt touch a bull/greyhound , its all just peoples opionons Dale Ive no wish to put your choice of cross down ,but in over thirty years of coursing Ive yet to see a deerhound cross that was the equal of a saluki cross onj big land ,the deerhound hybrids are fast up to their hare but lack the stamina to stay with the saluki crosses, and Ive kept both anyone not sure which type is the most suitable for coursing should get hold of some of the Forley Cup dvds, the dogs that predominate in these are saluki types, enough said! Blaze 49
Something like this , it would do better than any deer / grey , or bull saluki, there not hare dogs , first x salukie greys cant stay .... Proper coursing dog!.... Edited February 26, 2007 by blaze1 Quote Link to post
DUCKWING 302
WELL LADS , BEFORE I WOULD CHUCK OUT A REPLY ....... FIRST I WOULD WANT TO KNOW THE TYPE OF LAND THE DOG WAS TO RUN ON ......... I RAN MERLIN / EVE , LILEY BRED DOGS BEFORE THEY BECAME POPULAR WITH THE MONEY MEN ..... YEP THAT LONG AGO ............. AND ON THE BIG LANDS FOR HARES NOTHING CAN TOUCH THEM LINE BRED SALUKI LURCHERS PERCENTAGE WISE , IMO .. NOT EVEN THE FIRST OR SECOND CROSSES ........... HOWEVER THE BREED EQUATION CHANGES WHEN THE LAND AND THE HUNTING STYLE CHANGES IVE SEEN SOME VERY EFFECTIVE DEERHOUND CROSSES KILL HARES ON THE SMALLER FIELDS SURROUNDED BY HEDGES WHERE A DOG HAS TO JUMP WELL , LAND MOST HEAVY BRED SALUKI CROSSES WOULDNT DO WELL ON .......... THOUGH BELIVE IT OR NOT I ONCE SAW A COLLIE 3/4 BRED HUNT UP AND KILL OVER TWELVE HARE IN ONE DAY .............. TRUELY THE OLD SAYINGS A TRUE ONE " HORSES FOR COURSES " ALL THE BEST DUCKWING Quote Link to post

scottish lurcher 185
if the dogs got the heart thats all that matters in my book , Dale It need s the heart no question ,but on open fenland,it also needs the lungs! alot is to do with the guy on the other end of lead to my dog works rabbits and the land i work we have all but wipe out rabbit population wish she wasnt as good that way i would not be looking for new land to work i aint bigging me or dog up but a saluki cross dont need lungs they should finish chase before it starts but i had couple of saluki cross greyhounds pre ban and the had plenty stamina and would chase hares all day and night i think it horses for courses i have seen some great deerhound crosses in fact new a couple of good ones that on hare they seem unstopable so i belive it just depends on dog Quote Link to post
burnie69 376
Top chalker's spot on Just look at [bANNED TEXT] always wins the competition's not once seen a deerhoundx in any single handed finals the odd 1 got to the double handed a few years ago but if i remember rightly this was mostly greyhound with just a touch of deerhound maybe 1/8 imo the proof is in the pudding, all dogs will catch a odd hare but not a fit dec/jan hare in the DAYTIME.Ragumup if your after a pup i'm lining a very good bitch give me a ring if you intrested.
