air gun ant 1,666
Hi I'm new to this so don't laugh please :-) this is my first season shooting shotguns I've done beating for a few years but never had anything to do with the birds pre-season. This year a few of us have decided to do our own little walk round on 1 of my permissions, we put the pen up and collected 50 ex-layers on saterday, I've been to feed and water them today and there must be 30 eggs around the place!!! Some randomly scattered and some in little clutches. I just wondered should I collect these to avoid atracting carrion or do I leave them to see if they would hatch? Bear in mind I can only be there a couple of hours every day/2days So don't have time or experience with chicks or poults hence the ex-layers. Thanks in advance ant :-) Quote Link to post
Millet 4,497
If they are not in some sort of nest and just scattered as you say, it is pointless to leave them laying around. Quote Link to post
air gun ant 1,666
so would it be worth leaving the ones in little clutches? would they survive in the pen with the rest of the pheasants, cos some do look like little nests Quote Link to post
Millet 4,497
If any of the hen bird's are sitting i dont see why you can not leave them in there but any random scattered egg's will just be left to rot or feed corvids. Quote Link to post

air gun ant 1,666
yes we have about 6 or 7 cocks and the rest are hens Quote Link to post
butcherboy 68
Take all the eggs that are easy to get to out (don't disturb a bird to get them). If they are still warm stick them under a broody hen and see what happens. Use the others in your traps. Quote Link to post
Lab 10,979
yes we have about 6 or 7 cocks and the rest are hens Leave the hens that are sitting and see what happens. If the nest is in full view cover it with a few off cut branches.... Quote Link to post
