Running a whippet

Recommended Posts

First off, I just want to say hi as this is my first post on the "Lurchers & Running Dogs" section. I am a out and out terrier man but we got hold of a 15 month old whippet dog around a month back. The guy who had him before me had started working him but he needed bringin on. He got rid of him because he didnt have the time for him so we took him on. I have had him out lamping once and this was purely to see how he works. I found that he was over running rabbits and wasnt thinking about when they turn. I know that this is to do with him being young, inexperienced and over-eager.

What I want to know is, is it best to keep him going and let him learn by his own mistakes and will this bring his confidence down and start him yapping? If not shud I wait until we start ferreting and give him some easy runs if you know what I mean

I just want to make clear that I took him lamping because I had him on a week trial to see if we liked him and thought he was any good so I wanted to make sure he knew what he was doing.....before any comments about "you shouldn't be out lamping at this time of year".

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

this will come with time, and field craft bud, i would try him on the lamp on some easy sitters bud to be honest, i dont care what others think, as long as im happy, and im out with me mutts i dont care. There is nothing better for a dog to gain trust, and give them confidence on easy rabbitts, and id bet most on here have done it to start of a young dog. Good luck in all you choose thumbs.gif

He will get better with time get a sitter well out get between the rabbit and its home get as close as you can ,Alternatly get a sitter get someone else to slip him and shoot the rabbit with an air rifle and as it jumps on being shot slip him do this a few times and he will do the rest.Once he,s had one in his mouth there will be no stopping him.

if you know of someone who as got a good lurcher or whippet go with them and run it with it as long as its in on the kill it will gain confidence and that breeds success

to be honest bud, and its only my view, i wouldn't be slipping 2 dogs on a bunny, especially if the other lurcher is a good retriever, as it can spoil a good dog

Thanks for the comments guys. Some stuff I hadn't even thought of doing. Im not too fussed what I have to do to make him catch, my only worry was that Id end up doin something wrong and have the oposite effect as he's the first running dog I've had.

Any more suggestions would be much appreciated :victory:
