Rearing young together?

Recommended Posts

Someone once told me that he bred his ferrets at the same time and left them to give birth in the same cage and rear their young together and it worked with no problems. Just wondered if this is the case as i have bred my two jills at exactly the same time and they're both pregnant and have about 2 weeks to go before their due date. Shall i leave them together to get on with it or should they be separated? Cheers, Sam.

i wouldnt mate, i had it once, i came home from work to find that my jill had her kits very early, whilst in the jill court, they was only one kit left, the rest had been eaten, gutting!!!! so to be on the safe side i wouldnt mate.

Id leave them together i was always in favor of them helping each other out and i didn't want to fill the garden with hutches .but if your going to separate them do it now so they can settle down in there last week

I would separate them , Iv'e seen it done successfully but my theory is that, in amongst all that competition, the smaller jill kits will find it the hardest to survive. I prefer to mate them at the same time and separate them, then if the litters are unbalanced in number, I will even them out by fostering.

:hmm: How many had been eaten? not unknown for a jill to have a single kit

not sure mate, all i know is there was a lot of blood in the bed box so i presumed that they had been eaten.
