Read my post it clearly states I never owned one, but saw plenty in my days, in the 60s and 70s whippet racing was very common, and Blue one, your the type a person who sits behind a key board, and

bad feet no stamina and can only catch a hare on the lamp or in its seat i love myths lol   here are a few of mine   Tod non kc whippet 4 years old 21 1/2" about 38lb

Pretty sure they are capable of taking a hare or two   Poor feet and thin skins yet has never kept one-----another quote from a popular urban myth

cracking pics lads.

well, their you have it, good working whippets, do it well, they have good feet and not all, have bad coats!

They are not out and out fox, hare dogs, but at rabbiting, they excell and do, take a few long ears and the odd fox.

Border lad :hmm: , before you attack me, about my comments, get your facts right sir, obviously, you have very limited knowlage of working whippets. :(

As for my dog, i think you will get sick  ...if you seen what she can do. :bye:

A Late friend of mine, had a whippet, could go out early morning, for a run on a live rabbit,or Hare, about an hours work out,

Have his breakfast, and then in the afternoon 1 pm go to the local whippet, racing club, and his dog ((( Ricky)))) could and would Win a race there

but he still had shite feet, and paper thin coat, great for running on a golf course, football, pitches, and so on, another good but Late friend,

had 3 one was like a grew,27lb the other 2 were about 19lb mark, again he had permission to keep the rabbit population down on the local golf club

all 3 could run, and catch in favoured conditions, but again soft injury prone, they would not do any good in a turnip field or a Kale field, apt to break a leg or put there toes up, I even seen one, we were hunting in amongst, some strong white grass, nearly break its neck hit a clump and

and went over head and tails, and when it got up she was not very keen to carry on, the mining, villages it was a common site to see, a man walk out with 2and 3 on a leash, again I never owned one, but plenty of people who I knew did, and I watched plenty, run NOT MY CUP OF TEA,

were they peds or non peds? or just shit dogs? Edited by Manitoba

we were out on many days at -6 and -7 some day even lowere very hard ground but we keep going in order to keep permission simple as that,

i think the whippet is highly under rated and surrounded by myths about shivering and being fragile with no stamina

there are some good breeders out there who have worked hard to produce the working whippets of today

 Said it a previous post, whippets are just as tough as most lurchers, whatever the cross, and will crash into some of the thickest cover to catch whatever they are chasing, and certainly don't lack determination. Brilliant little dogs

if whippets are so good why is there 2 dogs chasing in nearly every pic?

Well it looks like chickens4ever is carrying out some pest control using his dogs, and it looks to me that they're doing a good job. Could ask the same question about salukis in their native land. If they are so good why is it that the pics/videos I see on here have 3, 4, 5 or even more coursing one hare/gazelle?

Link to post

it depends on what you are doing when we are out ferreting we alwasy have 2 dogs which are free running so as a rabbit bolts more often than not both whippets will chase sometime we hold one just depends on the land, if we were lamping its would be one dog at a time, and other time if there sre holes on either side of a wall or fence we have a dog on either side and they have single runs, all the land we work we have permission so normally a pair of us go and take a dog each, like a say it depebnds on th curcanstances of the land and the runs.

and just becuase there is 2 dogs dosn't mean that there are more myths than facts floating in the hunting community.

what you also find is because of there light wieght they damage far less whnt they hit a fence or hedge than a big lurcher would.

no one saying there so good / more of a case of there not that bad/ singlehanded

I think Tom has answered your question, to be honest the more people who believe the urban myths about these dogs the better as it keeps the messers and dog swappers away, becoming too popular could really be a bad thing

O yer i forgot the common practice of taking more than one dog ferreting and tying them up to make sure the runs are single handed. . . . . .
