Size is not a measure of quality. For size, quality and well run lurcher and terrier events, then out of all the above it would have to be the Moira show at the end of May as far as game fairs go.

TC

Couldn't agree more - re size and quality but not on your conclusion about Moira- which might just be a little biased! In 2011 our fairs will offer SIZE, QUALITY and UNSURPASSED VALUE FOR MONEY!

If you want real quality and a good size fair then Ballywalter with its superb traditional venue of a beautiful estate with lake will be hard to beat this year. With over 130 stands and a great display of guns, tackle and clothing ( and even a punt gunning demo!); a real international gundog event featuring teams from both parts of Ireland AND a Danish team; superb angling demos and competitions on the house lawns( including Charles Jardine and Glenda Powellin Victorian costume with Victorian tackle!); Great clays with good published prizes AND great terrier & lurcher events including the first heats ( other than at Johnny Dicker's show) of the Master Mc Grath International Challenge to find the fastest lurcher in the UK ( and the unveiling of a specially commmisioned portrait of the great dog outside Browlow House) and a heat for the Five Nations International Lurcher Championships.

Moving on to the Irish Game Fair at Shanes Castle - If size counts this is the largest Game or Country Fair in Ireland and once again it has real quality in terms of competitions, stands, main arena and a great traditional venue in Shanes Castle, the birth place of the 'Kings of Ulster'.

It will also stage the finals of the All Ireland Game Fair Championships; the All Ireland Terrier & Lurcher Championships and the final of the Master Mc Grath Challenge and again there will be a real international gundog event with 10 teams of golden retrievers from all over the UK taking part plus international teams from NI, ROI, Wales, and Holland and an 'endorsement' of the gundog primacy of this fair is the fact thatthe Kennel Club from London will be taking a stand.

Now the country sports fair at Moira is a reasonable size, and has reasonable attractions and the organisers have done well to create some sort of atmosphere on a site which , when all is said and done would appear to be on playing fields in a public park, without any real water for gundogs and with various attractions such as the terriers & lurchers slightly remote from the main fair. On size I feel it has fallen behind Shanes on virtually all the parameters and on quality, not least with its huge venue and prize disadvantages, I think it falls behind both Ballywalter and Shanes.

However we invite both TC ( and the other Moira organisers) and anyone else to judge for themselves this year through our unique TWO SHOWS for the PRICE of ONE. Buy a ticket at Ballywalter and you get a FREE ticket to Shanes Castle. Ballywalter and Shanes will certainly not be beaten in terms of value for money!

Thankfully as event organisers of the National Countrysports Fair and the Ballinlough Castle Country Fair, our primary focus is on protecting as many of our respective countrysports and country ways of life as possible, through working to ensure they are preserved for future generations. This too is the ethos of those we work with before, during and after our events. We have no time for gameplay, are even less worried by it and certainly will not be dragged into it.

Great to see you coming on the forum under your own name instead of an apparent range of nomme de plumes AND great to see you using your own event brand names rather than apparently trying to tap into the success of ours. It really did appear rather 'naff' of one of you to go on twitter as 'irishgamefair' and use what is our brand name to sound off against BASC,the BASC Fair and other people etc. People mightn't like what I say but at least they know who they are 'talking' to.

There was no gameplay in my response to the person hiding behind the name True Countryman - I was just simply putting him straight about factual matters.

I am delighted to hear that you are now committed, as we have been since 1978, to promoting and defending country sports, and the preservation of the countryside and the rural way of life. At least we can agree on that.
