bushing terrier

Recommended Posts

i want to get a non working dog, staffie x,into a bit of bushing hes a complete non worker just a pet but want to make use of it if i can rather than buying in another dog,no he will not be getting the lead earing if he aint no good lol.

i get him out with the lurcher and over the last couple weeks he has pushed fox from cover and also a munty, not for knowing what they are he doesnt know what he looking for but just from picking up their scent and following it in on them or maybe it was shear luck who knows but seems he has a good nose and he readily gave chase giving tongue not likely to catch them after all but i want him to go in constantly not as and when he feels like it,is it just a case of keep getting out there amongst it and hopefully he might become useful or is there anyway i can get him working cover more methodicaly bearing in mind havnt got a decent terrier for him to watch and learn the ropes so to speek.

Just take him to where there's plenty of game and learn to read your dog on when he picks up a scent, then help him follow it up but be all nice and calm about it.Only when he catches show a little excitment that he done well, good dog work is team work and not just leaving it up to the dog to do all the work.Just hang in there, give him the chance and who knows you might just flick that light on in his head and he'll do all asked of him, best of luck.

I once bought a Staffy for the wife when i was working away a fair bit, never intended to work him really but he just took to it naturally, even retreived stuff wagging his tail like mad, unfortunatly he was stolen and i never found him, absolutely gutted.

Just get him out mate, maybe show him some carcases to show him what hes after, mine had a fair old nose on him and would go through pretty much any cover exept really tight bramble, nice looking dog you got there as well

Mind if I join you one day? My terriers have seen plenty of rats, but seems to be a lack of rabbits in the S. West
