bargain books

Recommended Posts

A couple of weeks back I popped into a local secong hand book shop , looking for any dog hunting books , now its run by oap volunteers and handicapped adults so I didnt want to go in guns blazing saying what hunting books you got cos you dont know these days which way people react ,so I say to the old lady working there do you have any dog training books , so she shows me where they were and i looking through loads of pet training books and basically the pet section , where I find a rough shooters spaniel training book by Moxon brilliant ,landed good find , and a nice book on whippets but nothing much else , so I go down stairs to pay and the old lady notices the spaniel book and says oh you shoot do you , so i think its safer to lie (dont need the anti nonsense )and say no just got a spaniel and going to train it oh she says thats a shame a freind of hers was a game keeper who recently passed away and left all his books to the shop .

So i got to back track now and explain to her why i said what i did , turns out she an absolute star , been on safaris , horses ,shooting ,hunting all her life to old now she says and absolutely bonkers full of stories and asking me do i know so and so who was a game keeper here and so and so who hunted with so and so , I didnt know any of them like i said im 40 shes nearly 80 i wasnt around then lol . so she says theres loads of books here , but she doesnt know where , if I call back in a week or so she will sort some out for me great i say .

Any way I called back today and shes not there so I explain to the bloke what she said , and he knows where the books are so he comes out with a big pile about 20 books , I had a quick look through and picked 3 which came to a tenner (all i had on me ) so I went to pay and he goes £3 please as all the second hand books are a pound each ,well that was it went over the bank got another tenner and ended up buying 15 books gave him £20 cos i was getting a bargain I thought , now heres the best bit, I come home and start going through them properly theres tiger hunting books by Jim Corbett, B N Gordon Graham ,T Murray Smith , Kenneth Anderson and a book by Frank Wallace which I checked on amazon is worth £45 and mine is signed first edition :icon_eek: the gamekeeper at home by Richard Jeffries and a few rough shooting books .. theres a ferreting book by Graham Wellstead which I have all ready got so if any one gets to the end of this post and wants it pm me .. sorry this is so long nut I landed at getting such a bargain and some good books to read ..

Well done on the find, but don't be ashamed of what you do. :thumbs

Old people are usually the most understanding when it comes to hunting anyway. Most of them are old enough to remember hard times when you couldn't afford to be fussy about where your meant comes from, and they grew up around butchers shops with dead pigs and half cows hanging up in the windows! :D years ago we were more connected to where our food came from, these days most people like to think it comes from a factory ready wrapped in plastic.

Dont get me wrong Im not ashamed of what I do , but sometimes when you say you go hunting you get a load of crap and its easier to say nothing than to answer 20 questions , and this lady looked like one of them charity do gooder types , but she was great .what I am guilty of is judging someone I didnt know :icon_redface:
