TWOTWOTHREE 152 Posted March 28, 2011 Report Share Posted March 28, 2011 Hi there Ive i wonder if anyone can help me out.Ive been growing everything from peas to turnip and everything in between on my allotments for past ten years.the only thing i cant get right is Spuds this has only been the last two years before they have been ok.Ive tried lots of different types and rotated every year. They are great to start With, i use them for boiling and salads but when it comes to diging up to bag em they are full of holes.not had this before.any ideas folks.please let on.thanks for your time. darbo 4,779 Posted March 28, 2011 Report Share Posted March 28, 2011 agree wth trappa slugs.you can use tubers less affected by slugs eg charlotte,kestrel,romano. you can also use biological control nematodes which you can get from the organic gardening catalogue or maybe gardening centres may have them. you water into the soil. just follow instructions on the box. have used them for a few years with good effect. TWOTWOTHREE 152 Posted March 28, 2011 Author Report Share Posted March 28, 2011 Thanks for the advice guys.maybe im leaving them in too long.when do You advise i dig them all up for storing.ill try the beer trap too if i havent drank it all lol.i did have a couple of slug loving ducks roaming the garden but also had a duck loving fox that dug under the fence to put a end to that idea.so ill try some of the above.hope it works and get a better crop this year. My potatoes haven't been great this past couple of years because of it, it happened after a very wet summer. The blight spores live in the soil and compost heaps etc and can ruin crops in following years. I am growing only a few this year to see how they go. In the rest of my space I am going to grow onions and peas. It is disappointing to dig up mush after growing them and looking forward to fresh spuds. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
desertdog 149 Posted March 28, 2011 Report Share Posted March 28, 2011 if you think you may have had blight grow your spuds in bags,i always dig mine when the flower is off and the stalk whilts and goes yellow, but im sure you can spray for blight, look it up, dithain 945, if you can still get it. littlefish 612 Posted March 28, 2011 Report Share Posted March 28, 2011 I have always grew mine in bags but this year I am going to have to get new bags and completely new compost to try them in. I am only going to grow a small amount in a different corner of the garden to see how they do, I was gutted this past few years when they were spoiled.
