Request for Plummer Lurcher pictures

Whilst i'd agree with Chalks 100% that we all should be looking to the future, lines are always of interest and are as important today as ever, you only have to look to the coursing threds to see that today. For most lurcher lads (and terrier folk for that matter!) looking back at a bit of history in our dogs is a draw that is hard to ignore, no matter who kept 'em.

Nice one Optimus for some cracking pics  and for my two penneth worth, I belive Plummers original stuff came off James Arigho (spelling!) a gypsy who kept a good and old line of dogs. It's been posted on here before and though i can't find the thred, Bear, Penguine, Fathom were of this line.

After Plummer obtained the Di Fish half cross Merle he wrote that he used it over Fathom (producing Wooly Bear a dog that I had a grand daughter of.) and if I remember right Hancock stated that he 'saturated' the old line, producing the dogs we have seen. From what I gather some held the original dogs in very high regard and thought Plummers actions to be criminal..(?) Either way, it would be good if there is some info on the original stuff... Anyone..??

;)

you are right, brians original stuff when he was a lad came from arigho, but after myxy brian bred deerhoiund and saluki into his line as there was not much rabbiting for them and he was running more hares. these dogs were smarter looking (like snowball for example) but not as useful for all-round hunting, especially when the rabbit was making a comeback. so he put the collie blood back in, used merle and rusty and various other collie crosses to try to recreate what he had had 20 or more years previous. fathom was bred from penguin, (which was from the plummer/saluki/deerhound lines) back to a big rangy deerhoundy looking dog called burke, think bodger quimby had him? so fathom was a bit of a throw back as she had quite a lot of the old qualities without much of the old blood.

if you read brian vesey fitzgeralds book "its my delight" there is quite a bit about arigho and his dogs, i'm not so sure how "gospel" it all is though!!!

anybody else worked or work lurchers decended from Bodgers dogs?

dont know much about that line of dogs i'm afraid, but i do know that there are still dogs which can trace their ancestry directly back to plummers dogs on both sides. quite what that actually means is another story, whether the man himself would have made those particular matings or whatever.
