RATTING Vs DIGGING

Lets start different lurcher sections for deer, fox and rabbit....don't want them poxy rabbit catchers in the same category....lets start a separate section for snares, then traps, then didgery doos...come on who gives a toss, WORKING TERRIERS...rats, rabbits, fox...ok there different quarry and you require a specialist type for true earthwork...but surely them all being in the same section doesn't pose that much of a problem, does it????

thats my whole point ian, where does it end? :icon_eek: im for all forms of work, yes some are more challanging, but its hunting and work at the end of the day, any one can own a terrier, only some choose to work it, whatever the form of work.

Forgive me for being thick: but WHY do folks have a problem with terriers? the people that are working the dogs know what they are capable of, and are hopefully happy with them. If someone just wants to rat and bush with their dogs, then let them.

As far as I can see its a bit like the so called division between the coursing lads and those who use lurchers for rabbits: a lot of the coursing lads used to look down their noses at the rabbiting dogs, saying that they wouldn't be capable of catching a hare: so what! They were bred for a different purpose: or is that just it? The fact that all ( ;) well nearly all ) terriers were originally bred for earth work, and now a lot of them don't:

Skycat I don't think that people have problems with terriers its just that old fationed "MY DOGS BETTER THAN YOURS" and to be honest I know my Black fell would handle charlie 4 of her sisters are now over in Germany working the earth for badger.

I know the boy who gave me her works the earth and he hasn't got a problem with me not using her on charlie because he knows how good his dogs are!And I promised him the pick of litter when she is mated.

I use her for rats, flushing and finding shot roe deer, she has no fear and if the roe deer is still living she goes straight in for the kill.OK before anybody starts I know roe deer don't bite back but they can kick and she got to know that after the first time.

I think its great that your terrier is being given a job but just because her litter mates are earthdogs it doesn't guarantee your bitch would work  Only proven dogs should be bred from, this is how the working (digging) ability gets diluted. My bitch's sire and dam were both hunt terriers and from what i'm told the rest of the litter went on to be competent fox dogs, however my bitch mainly goes ratting and I didn't/don't get the chance to test her properly, so I got her spayed. Surely if your friends dogs are good then he would be breeding from them and keeping back stock rather than keeping a pup from an untested bitch?? Not a dig merely an opinion :)

This thread could and will go on and on and on, which is all the more reason to have two sections, above and below, the two will never ever compare in a million years, any digging terrier worth its salt will take in its stride a days ratting, you couldn't get a ratting/bushing terrier to do a digging terriers days work could you now.

wouldnt we now  ive had this arguement before, not going there again, seeing is beleiveing, untill you've seen, dont knock it

I have certainly had more than enough rats over the years to know the difference :tongue2:

This is the reason behind second rate terriers, or should I say second rate earth dogs, of course the offspring will kill rats and flush rabbits but there is a higher percentage chance they won't work fox/badger due to not being tested, surely the guy who bred your dogs, (unless he is just into ratting that is) wouldn't even contemplate using your bitch for breeding.

The terriers or type of terriers will never be in the same league, of course an earth dog is far superior to a ratter or rabbiter in terms of heart gameness and drive and this will always be the case.

Carry on ratting and rabbiting lads and let the digging boys carry on doing what they are doing.

Those folk that don't work thier terriers to fox (and find no objection to people who do) where fine and dandy to attend the march to London. The Champions league of digging dogs should have spelt out thier disdain for such none workers prior to the slep.

Don't be a dick when it comes to attacking FIELDSPORTS we should all stand together, whether you fly hawks , ferret, dig , shoot, or go ratting.

It isn't no champion league of digging dogs its just the fact that some people think that to be a good ratter you have to have some finely tuned hunting machine where in reality you don't, any dog/mongrel can do it, not any dog will work to ground.

To be honest mate, you dont know shite untill the dogs is tested to this type of quarry, week in, week out.....

I'll butt in again and say not knocking the ratters, all I'll say is it does take a special kind of dog to go down into the dark alone and search for it's quarry. Then it has to work, dig, follow, maybe search again and stay at it until they have their quarry where there is no place else to go.When this has been done he/she has to stay there taking what ever the quarry can dish out, even if it has to be for numerous hours until his/her master finaly reaches him/her and relieves them of their duty. Despite all this and what ever punishment has been taken, when the dog has healed if it has the heart it will do it all over again and again, alone in the dark with no help. To me that's what I call heart, gameness, stamina. The bitch I lost recently went 2 hours with Charlie on her first dig, when I broke through she had it where it was going nowhere and she never made a sound and did'nt want to leave her quarry either, her eagerness to work despite the punishment she took was faultless and there's a member on this forum that dug her with me so I've no need to try bum her up, but it's that type of attitude in a dog that makes me have more respect for an earth dog. JMHO.
