UphillDoc 278
Had the Capps crew and Stuntman over again for another afternoon hunt. We managed to corral 5 and each truck took a beatin from some good coyotes and some bad ground... We meet up and mix sets, Stunt jumps in with my son and I and The Capps boys and Mrs. CC in the other truck. Im hauling Hoss, Lazer and Capps Blue. They have Speedy, Bull, T and Stunts cur on one side, Brownie, Blackie, Ace and Stunts lurcher Grill on the other. The first race Hammer jumps them over the highway fence and they are headed our way. The coyote loses them in some washes, but ends up coming out ahead of us on a different road. We send them and they go thru some cows and some washes and plant him. Its a nice race, in and out of sight. We go to another field and they spot three different coyotes but the hills and rock washes dont ever let them get close enough to have a race. The coyotes are wise to our routine, and all the easy ones are gone. Another section they spot a couple and get both sides down to catch a double. One is really long classic race, we get the play by play over the radio... We continue on and the Mrs spots one out ahead of them headin our way. We get him lined out and make the drop. They have quite a bit of ground to make up, but plenty of room to do it, and they get it done. The next race for the Capps crew is happening at the same time we are tryin to go across the desert after a runner. Both trucks are headed into bad ground, and dont have all 4 wheels on the ground at the same time very often... We go close to three miles tryin to get close enough for the dogs to see the coyote but just cant close the gap. We take a desperation drop as we are about to run out of room with the coyote headed for a dairy. The dogs make up alot more ground than we were able to, but the coyote beats them to the fence and goes to ground. The Capps boys get a set on the ground early but the coyote beats them to the sage and washes. They push on but just cant make the catch in the rough ground with the coyote using every trick in the book. They drop a second set and with the dogs fanned out the coyote is in trouble...they go over a mile and are finally able to close the deal just before the coyote reaches a fence. We had some other wild rides and at one point as we were flyin across the desert my boy asks "Dad...do you know this ground?" Stunt was tryin to video the ride and says "they pay big money at the theme parks for rides like this" but managed not to scream too much and only knocked his head on the ceiling once... The constant ball bustin over the radio and the wild rides made the time pass way too fast. We even forgot about the dang tailgate pic... That made 16 coyotes in the last two weeks, about to wrap it up for the season. Take care. Edited February 21, 2011 by UphillDoc Quote Link to post
UphillDoc 278
tb25-Usually run 2-4 dogs at a time, depending on age, expierience etc... iceman-A course can be anywhere from 200 yards to 2 miles. Most of ours are in the 600-800 yard range (dogs on the ground). Alot depends on the ground. In flatter ground with less cover we give them way more law...in rough ground or high cover less. As soon as the dogs see the coyote and "call for it" I will stop and drop. I dont like to run the coyote with the truck if possible. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. We will drop from roads, or spread out and cruise thru the fields. The fields are so big the trucks can be a mile or more apart, and often times do not even see each others races. A coyote can dish out plenty of stick, if you got a jacker it wont take long to find out. Take care. Edited February 21, 2011 by UphillDoc Quote Link to post
